Hey all...second bull calf I have ever banded. Did it about 1.5 months ago. They are shrivled and still hanging. Getting raw around the endges. No real significant swelling and he is still moving and eating fine. Just getting a bit concerned as it seems a bit longer than the last time. Any help...

    another sick calf!

Give it a week and get another little guy. They do need the company. But let is settle and see how the one you have does. Pale yellow almost white scours? Maybe e-coli. Did you do any scour guard or other treatment when you first got him? Did they get colostrum? As far as the pepto...I have...

    another sick calf!

Me again....when was the last time you tubed the electros? Try some Pepto in the tube to stop him up. Again...the dehydration needs to be stopped. Something else may kill him, but the dehydration will definately do it. MK

    another sick calf!

I have gotten them re-hydrated by injecting some electros, diluted more that directed, solution subcutaneously ALL AROUND THE BODY. Not much in each injection, just distributed around. If you are out of electros try with some saline solution. Sounds like the dehydration is the worst part right...

    very sick calf

Definately a change in feeding. Seems like alot of milk. Whatever ails him may be "feeding" on the nutrition he is getting! Raising dairy calves we followed the same feeding schedule as Farmhand. You would be surprised at how them babies would drink themselves to death if given the opportunity...

    Stomach lining sloghing off

only diagnosis is not a parasite/protazoa....which is all I really wanted to know. I can treat the rest with sulfa, electros etc....but if they are going to keep passing coccidosis back and forth I wanted to get some meds in the water. I treated her with sulfa when she first had the runs. Did...

    Stomach lining sloghing off

Hello all! Remember the sick calf I had....she was still eating but obviously having some stomach discomfort. She is doing fine but now, 3+weeks later she has some tissue and blood on the outside of her stools. She is still acting fine. I have seen this before after coccidosis and acute...

WAAAY New and need some advice

Go talk to someone at the local NRCS office or a local Ag Extension person. They will be able to help you with the BASICS. That's where you start. Look at the capacity of your land, how many acres it will take to support your current livestock (horses)-this includes how much time on pasture...

    Any Advice??? Sick cow

We had an ethisist at Colorado State that worked closely with the Animal Science Department. He was one hell of a guy...not your typical farm hand...in fact he would refer to himself as the Jewish guy from New York wondering how he ended up where he was. Having he and Temple Gradin in one place...

    scours

scours is a symptom...........not really a disease itself. Could be caused by a virus/bacteria/protozoa or simply a change in feed/routine. MK

    anyone hear of cryptosporiidae

Sounds like he is doing what he can....If they appear to be dying form dehydration that absorption supplement might do the trick. I wonder if a little pepto wouldn't help ease any discomfort and maybe give them some fight. One more thing...I am curious about what advice his vet gave him?MK

    coccidiosis?

This is another protozoal parasite...naturally occuring and causes problems when they ingest a lot of the oocysts. Another that is treated by supportive therapy although I have heard some say sulf helps I bet that is more due to it taking care of secondary complications. Once they are showing...

    anyone hear of cryptosporiidae

That Holstien could be the one that introduced it. Not really sure. It is a naturally occuring organism and there are other possibilities....it can lay dormant in the soil for a year, maybe longer. How big of an operation does he have? What are his options as far as managemnt at this point. If...

    anyone hear of cryptosporiidae

Cryprosporidia is a protozoa...it is zoonotic (affects people and other mammals). I know we had some problems with it at the dairy. It is shed through feces so prevention is key. Good sanitation and general herd management practices work best. They can pick it up form others and it can also be...

    Curious Scours...but eating

Well I really appreciate all the suggestions...what a nice group! On the antibiotics....two days of that sulfa without a change kinda made me think I jumped into the antibiotics too quick...but with the dairy calves that's what worked. Instead of keeping up with the oral I switched to the...

    UPDATE CUrious scours..... but eating

Thanks farmhand.........when we had a case of enterotoxemia at the dairy they went downhill fast....this one is just a puzzle. I need to remember that these beef calves generally have a bit more fight than the dairy calves. Since I only have two at a time, I just keep them on a bottle as long...
