Question: Irrigation pods and reel systems

Kathy, We put in roughly 35 acres of k-line about 3 years ago. It does take some "getting used to" when it comes to moving them, but it takes 15-20 minutes to move the 17 varying length lines. They are in 10 different paddocks that I rotation ally graze through. We were all flood irrigated...

    Bale grazing advice

I guess my second question about demolishing the small area, should have been...Can I expect to be able to keep this small pasture in the rotation next year; or is it going to have to sit out next year due to lots of litter and poo left over?

    Bale grazing advice

Not that this hasn't been discussed before, but tis the season...well in about 4-5 weeks if the snow doesn't bury my last stockpiled pasture. So I thought I would try bale grazing later this winter. I was looking for some thoughts on getting a few pastures set up for it. 1. Is adequate bale...

How Long Will This Market Last?

I see it as an opportunity to cash out, get out of debt, and slowly get back in as cash allows. Sure selling $1000 calves is nice, but with hay prices where they are(at least locally), there is not a pencil in the world sharp enough to make it work. My only concern is the hit on capital gains...

    got calves up

At this time the inspectors are not supposed to be affected. But that could change I guess

    Holstein prices

Thought I would bring this topic back up. My son got offered more Holsteins for .95/lb. guess he will have a higher feed bill this time, but if we got them now they ought to bring about the same money in the spring, and with the extra hay this year it shouldn't be too taxing to feed them...

West coast users of friendly/beneficial endophyte fescues

I used to live in Green. Anyways, I was over there last week before they tricked me into back surgery, and I would say this year you are gonna have to just hold tight and wait for rain. I have never seen it that dry over there as this year. Have you soil tested? Seems lots of the ground off...

West coast users of friendly/beneficial endophyte fescues

Rhune, where in s oregon? I am east of klamath and planted a mix from barenbrug a couple years ago. It is rocking for production. You can buy directly from a rep, and depending on how much you can pick it up yourself in Tangent. We got an independent dealer over here too that peddles forage...

    $ 70.00 a roll.... wtf

I have to agree with Dave on this one. Anytime, buying or selling, a standard unit of measure is going to be best. Seems if you are buying by the bale and there are extreme differences in weight due to size of bale it only makes sense. Especially if you are feeding cattle x number of pounds...

winter annuals seeded in/over fescue field

Existing grass is predominantly fescue, several types of the newer soft leaf stuff, and some perrennial rye grass. It was planted in the fall of 2011. First cutting was right at 3.25t/ac with 7.5 4x5 bales/ac. But lots of bare ground stii from planting with 7.5" spaced no-till drill. So...

winter annuals seeded in/over fescue field

I was thinking of oats or maybe triticale. It is an irrigated situation, so not entirely dependent on rain. But we wouldn't be planting until let August or early September. So we would have maybe have 3-4 weeks prior to a hard killing frost. Would oats provide enough forage to justify the...

winter annuals seeded in/over fescue field

so we just got done with our first cutting of grass here in S. Oregon. Chalk it up to a good grass year, or improving the fertility; but our yield was 250% of what our first cutting was last year... So now that we have enough hay for the upcoming winter, I thought I would try some...

    teff hay

I am interested to see what you find out. Here in SE Oregon irrigation is paramount for hay. I was thinking of interseeding some teff into alfalfa for tonnage purposes, but it is almost a foreign language around here. Are you planting a straight teff stand?

    Grazing Price Question

I think mine is around $12/hd/mo. So if I put 25 hd in there for about six weeks I figure it is about $500. If it is winter ground and he isn't feeding, it is worth every bit of that to him. But 200 hd on 400 acres won't last that long. At least I don't think.

    Grazing Price Question

I would say since it is in the middle of his other allotment it is worth it to him to not have others bringing in cows. If this is range, non-irrigated native pasture it will depend on the year as far as carrying capacity. I rent some from my parents. 160 ac in similar country and they get...

    Holstein prices

Thanks for the replies. I guess it depends who wants them. Got offered another batch today that average 375 for $82/cwt. My son has been buying them so it isn't a grand scheme master plan, but the first couple bunches he bought are about ready to move on.

    Powerflex Fiberglass Post

Since it fits with this thread... What about the power flex t-posts that are recycled PVC or some self insulating material. Anyone ever used them? Any advice one way or the other? I am thinking about using them for interior cross fencing and multi strand perimeter fence (horse pasture). I...

    WW Beefmaster Squeeze

Thanks for the feedback. From looking at pictures I am not sure we feel that comfortable with the whole tailgate set up. It looks like an anxious cow could just let her way right up in the palp cage if she wanted to. And it seems there is nothing to stop the one in the chute from backing over...

    WW Beefmaster Squeeze

Probably not the right place to put this question, but anyone have one of these? Any likes/dislikes about WW equipment for a permanent set up? vs say building a wood sweep, alley leading to a PR chute? Would really like a Moly Silencer, but for 50 cows and 100 stockers not really going to cut...
