    DEAD COW

I was at an OSU extension deal about 6 months ago or so and they talked about composting dead animals. Their site doesn't seem to be working, but here is an article from Iowa State that talks about it. I haven't tried it yet, but I have been considering trying it...

    Best Brahman Cross

Thanks for the tip. I looked up his website and I really like the look of his cattle. I imagine I'll have to get down into TX to get a bull, so I'll definitely stop by his ranch.

    Best Brahman Cross

This is all great advice! I think I'm going to use a Red Brahman this year to try raise some nice females. Then I'll follow that up with either a good Hereford or Angus bull. lol. So if you are a Red Brahman breeder in or near OK, I'll be looking for a bull this Spring.

    OIE and Animal Welfare

Europe certainly has had some questionable policies. I do think agree that the level of subsidies is probably influencing a lot of their decisions. I think all of us in agriculture need to do a good job of "selling" ourselves to the US public so that when these types of things come up, the US...

    OIE and Animal Welfare

I agree 100%. It it is very clear that the EU choice is politically driven. I would guess that it is their form of protectionism. That was kind of the point of the article that we wrote. We tend to focus on the national trends in animal welfare, but US agriculture could be impacted by...

    Cancer Eye

I've cut an eye out before and the cow did well. As far as growths, if you can freeze it or burn it off, it probably won't effect a 13 year old cow (i.e. benign growth). If the growth metastisizes, then there isn't much you can do. We have a calf this spring that was born with a growth on his...

    De-Horning

Great ideas everyone. I just finished up a day helping a neighbor who had a neat little saw. He was only tipping, but it got through them in a hurry. I don't mean to break rules, but I googled it to see if I could find a picture. This looks pretty close to what he was using...

    OIE and Animal Welfare

We just finished our newsletter, and we had a short article on this. It seems like something to keep an eye on, and if you don't know much about them, you might read up. They certainly could have an impact on the beef industry in the future. Below is part of our article (no link--want to make...

    What's good about Corriente?

I met a guy that was raising them. They didn't eat much, I guess. He was trying to find a niche market for them (after they were done roping 'em). He claimed they tasted better and steaks naturally came in a portion size that is better for folks watching their weight. Personally I don't know...

    De-Horning

gigley wire? I'm not real familiar with that one. I've used the keystone before, but I was hoping to avoid cutting these. One of my least favorite jobs, too. Thanks for all the input!

    De-Horning

I missed a couple of heifers this Spring and was wondering what the latest you could use the hot-iron (brand a circle around the base of the horn) to de-horn them was? I know the recommendation is 4 months, and I would imagine it depends on the size of the horn. These are 6 months old...

    Best Brahman Cross

Hmm...not sure what happened on my post above, but thanks for all of the replies. I currently run a Brahman mix, but I think it would be wise to get a little more uniformity. Somewhere along the line, I started seeing finer boned flat sided cattle with a lot of leg. I've eliminated...

    Best Brahman Cross

Thanks for the information. I've also started watching the horns pretty close and trying to get them dehorned. I was getting knocked pretty good at sale time with nub horns. I've been thinking about trying a good red brangus bull next.

    vaccines, killed vs live

I've been considering MLV instead of killed because the booster shot isn't as critical in the MLV and I can't always get that second shot into them in 21 days. I'm a little concerned that the MLV will sero-convert, so I haven't used it. Anyone have problems with the MLV making them sick? I'm...

    Best Brahman Cross

What is your opinion for the best Brahman cross cattle for commercial production? I've always heard/read that Brahman cross don't grade well, but I sure like the size and disease resistance.
