I gauge by their behavior, not their bags or springing. One of my 10-year-old cows calved a couple days ago and her front quarters weren't full, nothing "woah!!" from the back side view. But I know how she rolls and she doesn't fully come into milk until after she calves. But she did make a point of leaving the herd and bellowing from the fence close to the house, essentially demanding cubes. I'm a sucker, caved, walked out of the house to give her cubes - because I knew she would calve that night. Found her with a big, gorgeous heifer calf the next morning.

I'm sure thinking Bessie could bust just any minute! I've had her penned for her last 2 calves. She's the MOST swollen back there I've ever seen her. Her teats never fully "iron" the wrinkles out. But her bag is definitely there!! Bet this one is a bull. 😔

Goldie is a crapshoot. First calf for me here. She's not a heifer. But I just don't "know" her.

Be nice to have 2 new babies in the morning.

Funny I stood out there a while and just watched em. The amount of movement in their bellies is just crazy!

I got kicked by Tator's calf this year!!! Coolest thing ever. She gets really needy when she's close, so I was giving her a back scratch/massage and felt a kick to my stomach. Then another, then another. Calf clearly getting into position, and I've seen it numerous times, but never felt it.

Hmmm. I better figure out a plan for a milking stanchion or chute huh? When you guys say "grain" what specifically are u thinking?

It ALMOST like Bessie knew Eleanor was struggling a bit. I really don't think Eleanor has enough milk for 2 calves this late into lactation. Bessie came up this morning like she knew what needed to be done. Walked right in the pen, turned and looked at me like...
Go get my baby please. Let's fix this mess!

I got em seperated. Penned the calves seperate thus morning. Brought Eleanor in the small pen and turned her two in on her. Fed Bessie and Eleanor seperate.
Gonna do this for a few days til lil fart is more aggressive.

I did let the other two relieve Bessie a lil this morning. She's was dripping with milk like always.... !

He's a bill payer unfortunately.
Banded too! For a lil fart, he was pretty well endowed. Easy to get em both.

He's good sized. About 75lb or so. And fiesty! Liked to tore my truck apart this morning when I went and got him outta the pasture!
 
@MurraysMutts this is what I'm talking about. She was kind of on the move this morning but made a beeline for the Polaris, begging for cubes, acting a little too excited - because she's normally my most laid-back cow. This will be her 11th calf, so I recognized her behavior and knew she'd have it either today or this evening. Took this pic a couple hours ago and believe it or not, she's in active labor. See how she hasn't come into milk in her front quarters? And her tail isn't sticking straight out. But I know how she rolls, just checked her and she has a nice baldie - not even up yet. BTW, this is my "hedge apple cow" from last year. Doing great!
