    Changing Direction

Might consider buying what I call "last calf heifers" in the early spring. These are old, mostly broke mouth heavy bred cows. Calve them out and raise calves thru summer then sell whenever run out of grass but no later than labor day because they always get cheaper between Labor Day and...

    Texas Panicum/Hurrahgrass hay

Does anyone have a comparison of tx panicum hay vs bermudagrass hay. Have opportunity to buy the 2nd cut tx panicum hay that was baled a second time after milo crop. It has almost no milo stalks since is 2nd cutting. What is your experience with this hay?

    Ultra Saber Pour On ?

Lice came back from hatching eggs that were laid before pouron was applied is my guess. Pouron killed adults and fly tags killed lice that hatched from previously laid eggs. Has kept cows lice free all winter.

    Ultra Saber Pour On ?

Have had good lice control using several different pouron insecticides plus a cheap permethrin fly tag. Pouron kills adults when treated and fly tag kills what later hatches from eggs.

    Hot Wire Training

In my receiving pen have a single polyrope wire that runs perpendicular to the perimeter fence. Hot wire extends about 15 ft into the pen and is between the water tank and the feed bunks. Usually only takes a couple of days to get them trained. Have trained everything from peewee calves to old...

    Feed ration and mixing

If you can buy all the ingredients, except gin trash, premixed, then hand feed those ingredients. Feed the gin trash free choice in hay rings. Know a guy that does this and works well. Cattle will eat all the mixed feed and fill their bellies with the gin trash.

    Feeding Whole Cottonseed

Have supplemented cows grazing stockpiled frozen bermudagrass with cottonseed thru winter for many years. Normally feed 1/2 of 5 gal bucket per cow, 3 times per week. If cows are really thin or lactating sometime feed 4X weekly. Is my understanding that gossypol is not such an issue with seed...

    Solar Panel Electric Fence Question

Suspect the battery is bad. Even if kept in sunlight they will go bad in a few years. Seems like being kept in dark when not used, batteries go bad even quicker.

    Calf table and castrating

After I bought Priefert S04 chute , I sold my filson calf table. Have worked a lot of 150 lb calves in the Priefert. Thought about hanging a removable 2x6 just inside chute at top of bottom door so could squeeze them a little better but never did it. I was banding instead of cutting. Maybe try a...

New to the board - Seeking advice on Custom Grazing

Been my experience in central Tx that stockers don't gain very well on bermudagrass in summer without supplement, so best factor that in your plan. I've come to the conclusion that our grass is better suited to cows than stockers. Good luck with whatever route you take.

When to start using Grazon and fertilizer on a mesquite filled pasture treated with Sendero

Remedy with water does not hurt the grass, just broadleaves. Have used Grazon but like this better. Less chance of drift onto neighbors cotton field. Also The Cimarron has some soil residual that Grazon does not. It will keep down late emerging broadleaves such as wooly croton.
