This is off topic I know but, Keren, do I spy a Harry Potter reference under those photos?

    Dinner or Lunch

Always been breakfast, lunch and dinner for us here with smoko inbetween (morning smoko and arvo smoko in the afternoon, of course). When in primary school, the first break of the day was always called "little lunch" just to confuse things even further!

    Fire and floods in Australia

Keren, I have nothing to complain about. We have had plenty of rain here and there's still more to come but nothing like what the guys up further north have had to endure. No flooding for us so far. Not like last year - 600mm in 24 hours on 15 Feb last year so I have some idea what they are...

    Fire and floods in Australia

The thoughts and prayers of all Queenslanders are with you guys. Watching the heartache and devastation on the news at night while it just keeps on raining up here is absolutely beyond comprehension. If only we could send some rain down south....

Can you use a mulcher to chaff hay?

Hi all, Currently looking at options to reduce wastage when feeding hay to our herd through winter. The best option to date seems to be to cut into chaff and feed out in tubs but chaff cutters are expensive. Some of the garden mulchers on the market in Australia advertise that they can be...

    who said cows are dumb?

Definitely not dumb. Our cows learned how to let themselves out of the yards. They discovered that if they leant on the handle just right, the gate would open and they could escape. We thought it was our fault the first time until we caught them in the act.

How did you pick your breed?

Squaremeaters. Being an all-Australian beef breed (based on the original Murray Grey genetics) appealed tremendously. In addition, they provide low birth weights, easy calving, are good doers, jave quiet temperaments and chunky butts (gotta love rumps!). These claims have been made by a...

Thoughts on this bull calf (14 months old)

It would definitely be an interesting cross. I've been telling my husband for a while that we should pick up some dairy cows as we've heard that they make fantastic recip cows. There are plenty of Squaremeater studs in NSW. You should have no problem picking up a quality bull when you are ready.

Thoughts on this bull calf (14 months old)

Backhoe, the Breed Association is certainly quite adamant that Squaremeaters bulls produce lower BW calves when bred to other breeds. Time will tell .... our older bull has been covering commercial Brangus, Brahman, Red Angus and Droughtmaster heifers (some will be first calf heifers) for the...
