    Best Sale Barns??

Another option if you don't wish to haul em to the sale barn. Put them old cull cows on feed. Get em fat. Butcher em. Those prime cuts will be nearly as good off this old cow as they are off of your young steers. The meat will simply be a little darker red.

antibiotics and other drugs - for newbies *updated 11/26/14*

LA 200 may leave lumps, as do other antibitotics and several vaccines. Use a 3/4 inch long to 1 inch long needle and make sure you are getting completely under the skin when making your injection. If you are not completely under the skin, it will usually leave a larger lump. Personally, I...

    weaning bulls and hiefers together.

You've been given great advice hersh. Separate them now. Heifers may begin cycling as early as 7 or 8 months. I've heard of some cycling sooner, most a little later around 10 months. If the bulls are not for breeding then steer them NOW. There is not any reason to wait. Bulls are nothing...

Help me to choose a bull

It is not possible to make a good recommendation based on photographs alone. None of these bulls (based on the pics) appear to be calving ease bulls. What are the EPD's? Don't make a bull purchasing decision based on reply's from this board or any other. If you do not feel you are...

    Which bull to buy?

Since you are selling most or all of your calves for the first 3 years, I'd go with a Charlais. If you are using good Charlais genetics you will have higher weaning weights than with the Herf's. After 3 years, I might go with a Herford bull, so I could get some good black baldie's. Black...

    Best Sale Barns??

If you can provide truck load quantities, with uniform and consisent cattle, look into Superior Auctions. You should be pleased with the results. Most local sale barns will be similar. The ones with the largest volume on a consistent basis will usually have the best prices. Buyers will show...

Bez has said it as well as I can regarding mini herefords. For many of you who are near Denver, Colorado, miniature herefords will be there January 21st through January 25, 2009 at the National Western Stock Show. Last year we had over 200 head at the show. This year the show will be on...

    miniature cattle

Miniature Herefords are real herefords. Back in the late 60's when the hereford breed began breeding larger, a few ranchers did not follow suite. One rancher in particular, decided to go the opposite way, by making a herd smaller. This where miniature herefords came from. Nearly all...

What determines whether a cattleman is serious?

The inital question from the previous thread was to define what is a "serious cattlemen". This is close enough. Excellent thoughts on this subject.

    Lowline Angus

What exactly is are "serious cattlemen"? Is there a quantity of animals that one must own? Is there a certain amount of revenue one must have? A profit margin? I live in an area surrounded by huge cattle ranches. One of my neighbors has about 10,000 head of cows. Would he be a "serious...

    Fence charger opinions needed

I don't use the solars, but I have one batter powered gallagher B160 and I have two zareba b25 units from tractor supply. I like the zareba units the best. They give me the best performance, my batteries last longer, and they cost quite a bit less. I use a 12 volt marine battery. I change...
