    Problems with neighbors dogs...

I had few dogs coming down raising heck every morning. I shot them one morning, buried them in a pre-dug hole. I never heard a word about it. I knew the neighbor would never do anything positive about it so I never even mentioned the problem, just quietly took care of it.

    Squeeze chute questions?

Yeah prob what you said would work. Im overseas now away from cattle...but looking back 35 years I once thought about putting in a narrower chute and small head gate just for calves...the regular chute worked ok if i put in something to keep calves from turning around. The automatuc gate had...

Please tell and show me your xbred Char cow experiences.

I've been well pleased with these Char and Charxs. I'm putting in a Charbray bull along with the Char bull this year. I have one calf that the young Charbray I raised must be daddy of. He's a bit small and growing slower but a lot could be with the cow itself, which I need to check my records...

    Jersey cow and calf

I have had several Jerseys over the years as nurse cows. I buy the smaller ones with small udders on purpose with hopes of less milk production. I do have a smaller one that looks Jersey but she is a mixed breed (prob 5/8 to 3/4 Jersey) andI left her and the calf the beef herd it's been 3-4...

Please tell and show me your xbred Char cow experiences.

I live in the most heavy cattle producing county in KY. I have found that quality calves of about any color sell well other than those with varied markings like a Longhorn or such and maybe Herefords. I do seem to have a lot of creams with white tails though that sell well. I haven't had a calf...

Please tell and show me your xbred Char cow experiences.

Char or CharX cows are my preferred choice. Mine are tame as puppies. The calves grow well and usually bring top price in their grade. I have tried to keep their size down so I sold the real big ones and most have just a touch of Jersey in them, like 1/8.

    Brood cow vs milk replacer

After raising hundreds and hundreds of calves over the past 30 years, I have only bought one bag of milk replacer in the past 20 years or so. It was a good learning experience for our early 20's daughter to bottle feed this calf last year. We were down to about 1 1/2 days of replacer when it...

    Brood cow vs milk replacer

There's a young man where I work that raises a few bottle calves. He may have anywhere from 1 to 10 at a time. I'm trying to talk him into getting a Jersey cow or something familiar for him to put some calves on instead if buying that expensive (IMO) replacer. I've raised lots of calves years...

    You ever have one vanish??????

We had a few day old calf come up missing for eight days. I thought it might still be around as the cow never called for it and then about 4-5 days into it missing I seen some calf poop on her ear...so I knew she just had it hid. Eight days later it reappeared and all was fine...

    Culling cow heard

For me it all boils down to that calf to sell at weaning...however I have sold some for being too big (1600-1700 lbs), some that have had poor calves a year or two, when prices were good, and wild ines, and a few years ago some for no good reason other than price at the time. For me age isn't...

    Expanding

Our first house paid off when I was 35, the first farm when I was 36. I say leave the 401K alone. I have raised heifers for years but I have started to sell them and buy bred cows. Some will bring what a cow costs. The return seems so much quicker. Some cows turn out really good, some in the...

    Insurance

I got ripped off too. For several years I was driving over what I thought was a foxhole or something. One day we had a calf bawling for its mother and finally seen a pair of cow ears sticking out of the ground. This foxhole thing fell in when our daughters cow was over it. It was like 4'...

Rookie needs advice with big decision

If that property was available here for that price and as you say in South Central KY, I would probably snap it up. I say go buy the property and once its ready get some cows. As for being profitable in 5 years...I cant say. The startup cost of things like fencing, working pens, etc. just seem...
