    Foolish or plausible?

Thanks for everyones advice. Now I won't have to prove to my neighbors that I'm a bigger idiot than they already thought. Ha

    Foolish or plausible?

Sorry Rafter, thought I had typed it but didnt. Bull is a mini herf as well. 1100lb range. For some reason I had it in my mind that most beef breeds started to hit puberty around 6 months. I know people typically shoot for 2 years old at calving but was unsure if the health concerns would...

    Foolish or plausible?

I've lined up more land (~25 acres of fair to decent pasture)to lease for next year and need to figure out what to put on it. Currently I have a ridiculous 'herd' consisting of 5 miniature herford cows, 2 angus cows (culling one this year), 1 charolais cross cow (culling this year), and an...

    pearl millet for winter hay

I grew it 3 seasons to use for horses and cows both. Only real worry with it at all is nitrate poisoning. If the field had N put on it, or was drought stressed, I'd test it before feeding it out.

    Newbie question on growing alfalfa

Thanks for your reply. Your area should be very similar to mine, slightly more rain and less clay I'd guess but fairly close. I neglected to mention that I have been running annual soil tests and amending for the last 3 years with alfalfa in mind while planting millet to get something from it...

    Tree Stumps

I use tordon RTU. Trick is to apply it IMMEDIATELY after cutting the tree down. Not tomorrow, not in a couple hours after a beer, right after it falls. Just cover the stump and go to the next tree.

    What is this? Hernia?

Thanks for everyone's responses. Being due to flies surprises me, I didn't know they could cause something like this. The callus theory made a little sense, they have never been on concrete but also do not receive any sort of bedding. These older cows have never had any sort of fly treatment...

    What is this? Hernia?

While checking the cows today I noticed something odd on one of the old bred cows I bought. I'd like to think I would have noticed if it had always been there but to be honest I'm not sure. I bought her knowing full well what I was getting (very old cow, bred 'sometime' last summer to a real...

    Newbie question on growing alfalfa

if this goes bust on me, I doubt I will ever try planting it again. Just too high cost if/when it fails. The ground had a decent stand on it shortly before I purchased it so I know it can be done (at least by someone who knows what they're doing). Between higher tonnage than my pasture grass...

    Newbie question on growing alfalfa

Hopefully this isn't too overly asked an answered. The last 3 summers I've planted about 7 acres of pearl millet to use for winter hay. After cutting it last year I took a leap and seeded it with alfalfa. It went in decent, caught a few rains (would have liked more), and looked decent going...

What makes a grain fed steer?

I've always been curious about people complaining about grass finished beef stinking or tasting really bad. It's always been someone who bought beef, or was given beef, from 'someone'. I've NEVER had a grass finished steak/roast/burger that I'd even consider 'gamey'. I do eat a lot of deer so...

    (mini)Hereford bull

I appreciate the responses and interest. Thank you. These are a few pictures I have of the cows from last year that somewhat fit the bill of from the side with their heads up. I've put on a few comments of what I *think* about them, please let me know where I'm wrong and what else to look at...

    (mini)Hereford bull

I may be wrong but from what I understand there isn't a problem with dwarfism in mini herfs (or lowline angus for that matter) as there is in a lot of dexters. I didn't set out to get minis but when they came along I could make it make sense with limited space and a very reasonable selling...

    (mini)Hereford bull

hot dog! It worked. Thanks. I knew I should have read the thread giving instructions on how to post pictures. This picture just shows an example of what I meant by 'jerk'. He's got a Napoleon complex and wants to fight anything bigger than him. I pushed him all over the pasture this day...

    (mini)Hereford bull

Well, I don't either but again I don't have a clue what I'm doing with cows. What you can't see in the picture is that this little guy is an absolute jerk. If he gives me good calves this year he will be tolerated another year. Maybe. If I don't shoot him first. If you're just being nice...
