    Cow dispersal - Tax question

Ha! I hear you Douglas!! The thing is, he's going out of business and he's got to make sure the IRS is happy. In other words, this close-out needs to dovetail with what he's been doing in the past, I reckon.

    Cow dispersal - Tax question

Thanks for the info. I think he bought all his cows so that should help him. On the other hand, I don't know if he did the depreciation thing. I know this, Uncle Sam will get his share!

    Cow dispersal - Tax question

My neighbor just sold his small cow herd. He asked me about the tax consequences...in other words, are the proceeds from this type sale taxable? I didn't know how this would be treated. Of course, he'll consult a CPA. In the meantime, what can y'all share with me around this?

    Acorn Eaters

I ain't no vet, but I play one on my farm. Frankly, I've never had a case of "Acornitosis" or whatever it is despite the fact that my cows chow down on them every fall. I've always theorized that cows have to overdose on acorns in the absence of adequate grass forage in order to get sick. Mine...

    4 wheeler mounted weed wipers

Good point, Dun. I will be using a high-grade surfactant in order to get a good "stick". I finally got an email reply from Quality Metals Works around finding a local vendor for the Speidel ATV mount wiper. They have a seller about 65 miles from me. I plan to check it out sometime this winter.

    Pine Tree Exterminator

Nice job. Must have been a lot of work. I do hope you have a plan to hold on to your progress. As a southerner, you well know that it can get grown back up in no time. Around south Mississippi, we'd see a place like that completely overwhelmed with Privett hedge, Popcorn trees, etc., in no time.

    4 wheeler mounted weed wipers

Fred - I would be using a real strong glysophate (RoundUp) solution. You know, that stuff comes in all kinds of different percentages. I'd select something like 41%. That ought to kill anything. I'm still not sure how just wiping it on the top of the plant stems actually gets a kill but I'm...

    4 wheeler mounted weed wipers

Did it work well for you? I could also hit some thistle in the early Spring around here.

    4 wheeler mounted weed wipers

Anybody had experience using a 4-wheeler mounted weed wiper to combat Smutgrass? I've got two pastures that have about been taken over. I'd say that 30-40% of those fields are Smutgrass. I need to deal with the problem this Spring. I really like the idea of the wiper. I'm scared to try the...

    electric fence mystery help please

Dang...the "induction" answer seems right on. I'll go ahead and get packed for the trip to the nut house...

    electric fence mystery help please

Well, first of all, you got yourself a "weapons grade" electric fence when the regular barb gets hot for no reason! I'll bet your cattle behave. Seriously, I have no idea how this is possible. Could it be that you have an insulator wire tied to a post - with the elecric wire touching that tie...

    Wet Ryegrass hay

Thanks for all the replies. I'm letting it cool down before storing. I do have a sour smell in some of it that bothers me. Maybe it will clear up once it gets good and dry.

    Wet Ryegrass hay

    They were baled tight.

    Wet Ryegrass hay

No, they weren't stacked. The man also had them on some hard "high" ground so that helps matters.

    Wet Ryegrass hay

Dun - They're 4x5 round bales. The hay was good and dry when baled. All excess moisture is from the rain. I am thankful to have a wet May. We've been dry this time of year over the last several years.
