Had a bull get in with a few young heifers now what????

and he probably went visiting for a good reason ;-) Wait 10 days and give all the heifers a shot of prostaglandin.

    Calving interval

Seperate placentas DOES NOT mean that a heifer will be safe from being a freemartin if her twin was a bull.

    blackleg

With the initial program of two shots (4-6 weeks apart) then the vaccine is said to be protective about a week after the second shot.

    blackleg

I disagree with three yearly - if they are breeding cows then a booster every year prior to calving will increase the antibodies in milk and protect the calf until it is vaccinated. Any cattle beast over three years is probably for breeding so an annual booster is cheap insurance!

Solutions for lack of milk production in nursing cows

I was wanting to see the feed and body condition in the pictures!

    Low Milk production solutions

Oxytocin doesn't "make milk" - it only makes the heifer/cow "let down" what she already has in her udder.

    cows not cycling

Pregnancy would certainly stop them cycling - so this needs to be ruled out regardless of where you think the bull was!!!! Other option would include anoestrus due to feed/body condition reasons (though you sound like this is not a problem). Another factor could be the feed they are on - very...

Fast death of a dairy cow

Thanks for that - I am aware that systemic bacterial, viral or fungal infection is a definite contraindication for dexamethasone - couldn't find any similar info on Predef...

    Sudden deaths in five cattle

looking at the variation of replies (any one of them could be right!) then I would say you need a vet to actually see the animals and the environment they are in before you will get an answer

    Sudden deaths in five cattle

Would nitrate poisoning be a possibility in this area at this time of the year?

    Mastitis

For lack of anything else to see is it is mastitis you could do a quick "home made" test... mix one part dish washing detergent and three parts water (mix don't shake!) then mix equal parts milk and this detergent mixture ( a couple of teaspoons of each will do). Swirl this together for about...

Fast death of a dairy cow

One of the indications for "Predef" is for acute toxic mastitis... here is a quote from the Pfizer drug info on it... "Overwhelming Infections with Severe Toxicity: In animals moribund from overwhelmingly severe infections for which specific antibacterial therapy is available (e.g., critical...

lethargic 4 week old calf that didn't get colostrum

If the calf has navel ill and is walking stiffly (sore in the joints) then I would probably write it off too. I've seen lots of similar calves - you can't patch them up for a while with antibiotics etc but generally if the bacteria have been in the bloodstream and gone to the joints you can...

    Mastitis

Have you done a "rapid masitis test" on the milk from that quarter???"?
