Got to be some kind of record

Well Lon, that IS what I said! Thanks. Not having any kind of calf is also fatal on my place.

Is there a market for good but non registered Hereford bulls

srbeef, I like your cattle. IMO your cattle get better than average care. I have no doubt in my mind that should you decide to sell this bull you would be honest and straight forward in how he was represented to the potential buyer. My method would be: "Here is the bull, his sire was ...

Got to be some kind of record

Caustic, Dun, Lon: Without a doubt having heifer calves is bad for a cow's health. My conclusion is about as scientific as some of the FDA's.

    Young bull behaviour

I've had a few one or two day old calves give me a real good butt on the leg. Usually when I have them up trying to resolve a problem. I think it's an instinctive self-defense mechanism they're born with rather than a sign of their future nature.

Cought Year Old Heifer suckling her mom

I think I would isolate the mom and her baby together for a few days to get them bonded again. It's possible that the calf has left her for the other cows and she will continue hitchhiking off them; thereby depriving their calves of milk. Should work itself out then. I used to get real ticked...

    Best time to buy

Like Caustic, if I'm in the market for cows, I get to the barn early. I get on the catwalk with paper and pencil and begin gathering info. Find cows that look to be prospects. If she has a calf, I then go to the calf pen and match up mama and calf by finding calf with number one higher than...

    Best time to buy

It is real useful to the one seeking advice and the one giving it if everyone will put at least their general locale in their profile.

    Calving Tip

Good tip Randi. If a cow is not absolutely vicious toward a new calf, I've found that confining them together after calving is beneficial. Seems that the cows usually wants some contact with her kind. If I'm having trouble with her the only contact with her kind must come from her new baby...

    coccidiosis

Caustic can calves get coccidiosis through mama's milk? Reason I ask; I don't think my calves even drink water at ten days old. Maybe mess around with it if the other animals are drinking.

    planting common bermuda grass

CC, you may want to check on when common bermuda is to be planted in your area. In my area, it is to be planted in July-August. Quite different to cool season grasses.

    Simmental X question

Several years ago, a local beef producer was taking a hit on the price of his Simmental calves. He's the type of fellow who puts a lot of thought in his decisions when he's ready to change directions. He began breeding his Simmentals to red angus bulls. He has kept some of his heifers. He...
