My cattle don't seem to like minerals

In the past I used Purina and my cattle inhaled the stuff, fast forward 10 years and they barely touch the stuff. I put our selenium blocks (includes salt) and they lick that thing every day. I bought some concept aid and will dump the Purina into my spreader and see if they take to the Vita-Ferm.

High Concentrate Feed and Foot Disease

Ron, I come from a dairy background, there is a reason the foot trimmer comes out every month to the diary, it’s the high protein diet. A commercial beef ranch near me runs their cattle very much like a dairy, because they actually have a dairy as well. Their Angus have foot problems...

    Yeast cultures and the benefits

That might be the dumbest and most arrogant comment I’ve seen of CT to this point. I always wonder James what it is that you’re trying to accomplish as a breeder. It sounds like your Dad has left you quite a legacy, some really nice cows. But where are you going from here, other than shoving...

Here's to the "let them eat dirt" crowd

2000lb cows isn’t a rarity in the Angus breed (Hoff). But as seed stock folks we have to have foresight as to how the size of our cattle will work for customers. I want my cattle to run at 1600 lbs, 6 to 7 frame, bcs 6 year round, because the folks I sell bulls to run smaller cattle 1200 lbs...

Gro-Tec AG Land Fescue 7 with Rumensin versus Vitaferm Concept Aid, the mineral debate rages...

That is a phenomenal question and something I needed to think about. Here in the far west Vita-ferm isn't readily available. I travel 200 miles round trip to get mine from a farm. Most of the year I use Purina loose mineral and blocks, this time of year I switch to Concept-Aid. I was...

Our President calf lost his mommy today. Very sad moment for us at Branded

That was a low blow and uncalled for, raise your own cattle as you see fit. Not cool.

Our President calf lost his mommy today. Very sad moment for us at Branded

With that much ear you sure that ain’t a Brangus. Branded I like to give you grief, but I’m sorry you lost that cow, she looks like a nice one. I could tell from the picture she struggled, her demise is one of the reasons I yell at my daughter when we work cows, work fast, be diligent and...

    Winter Feeding

I feed late afternoon, normal feedings are local grass hay 3x3x4 squares that get rationed, never feed a full bale at a time. When a cold front is coming in, then I dump a round bale (local, 1000lbs) that takes care of them for five days and supplement with some alfalfa. In our part of the...

    Fly control

I don’t use diesel, just livestock spray, does pretty darn good job.

    Fly control

I fill a garden sprayer with livestock fly spray and when I grain the cows, give them a nice misting every few weeks.
