Bought a pretty nice rifle in .338 Federal and need some glass to put on it. Any of you guys use these and if so how would you say they compare to say a Lepould or Redfield. Not looking to drop a house payment on a scope and just using it to deer hunt at pretty standard ranges but want some good quality. Thanks.

Ive never personally used one, i have more experience behind a leupy vxIII. I work with a guy who has had dealings with leupy vxIII and the conquest and he says the conquest actually does better im low light conditions compared to the leupy. He is someone who knows his stuff so i put faith in what he says when it comes to this kinda stuff. Zeiss makes good glass so i think youd be happy with it.

I'm looking for one for a model 70 winchester 7mm rem mag... I'd like to be able to do 400yard against a bear and see what I'm shooting at, low light capability is important as they never come around in broad daylight. A few people I know swear by the Bushnell 3200, I don't mind used but $500 is as much as I can put into a scope.
Every brand has its high end and low end scopes. You have to compare apples to apples. A $300 scope will not compare to a $1200 scope.
Both Zeiss and Leupold make good scopes and I don't think you can go wrong with either. I suggest looking through both because its really a preference IMO.
When I look through the Leupold I see better. Not sure if its the eye relief or what but its my preference. My boss has a Zeiss that is comparable to the VX3 on his .270. Its clear and a nice scope but the Leopold is more comfortable for me.

I've owned leupolds from vari-x to mark 4's. Mostly use vx-2 and 3's. I've owned zeiss conquest in 3 different magnifications. You can't go wrong with either. They are both 1" tubes, both have good eye relief, both have good warranties, but I have found leupolds warranty, customer service, and custom shop to be one of the best of any company I've ever dealt with. But I hear good things about zeiss USA also, just no personal experience.
I like zeiss's zoom ring and eyepiece adjustment better. I like leupolds tube construction better. Zeiss appears a little clunkier, leupold a little sleeker.
Zeiss coatings give a little bit of blue/green tint when I look through them that I don't care for much. If you compare the conquest to the newest vx2's you'd have a pretty fair and equal comparison. The vx3's would probably test a little better on technical resolution tests, but I doubt most people could see the difference on a big game scope (3-9x40 or thereabouts).

The Conquest is a grand or better now. Don't think they make the $450 Conquest that every liked any more. Zeiss brought in this Tierra for that $500 range scope and it's junk.
I bought a Marlin .308 lever action and I'm in the market for another scope now. Last night I was looking at prices and I could buy a nice VX3 cheaper than a Conquest.

Im going to order one. A lot of people say how good they are for the price. Im bad about buying used guns from people and then they sit. I have 4 or 5 guns that need scopes. Nothing fancy.

It's at the upper end of what I can afford, especially since I'm at a currency exchange disadvantage, but 20x magnification, 50mm optics, and a 30mm tube should do me well I'd think

Thanks for the input. I was pretty much between Lepould and Zeiss. Think I am going to try the Zeiss. Haven't seen the Vortex before but might check them out.
What range are you looking to shoot and what size game Nesi? Looks like a good scope but you would have to be really reaching out on some smaller game for that. Less than 400 yds. on deer size game have never needed more than a good 3x9 personally.

they are in the USA. i have not ordered from them, but they have a very good reputation, similar to opticsplanet.com, who may also still have the old conquests.

Thanks brute23.. I'll see what they go for around here... I think a bushnell 3200 with 40mm 12x is about $500, and I think for the yardage I'm considering is pushing the limit... going up to a 16x or 20x with 50mm would greatly improve usability at that range, especially at low light.
I'm spoiled on the magnification. Hunted with my dads Leupold 2-7 starting out which was plenty for how we hunt. I got spoiled on my 4-12 mainly on targets. I can sight in the gun at a 100-150yds and see the holes. Don't have to go back and forth with a spotting scope or binoculars.

Terra in no way compares to the Conquest (asian versus european tells the tale in optics no doubt) but I did put one on a Weatherby Vanguard in 243 just to be abused living in the overhead rack of my beater truck here in CA to shoot hogs and coyotes etc. and for the money and the intended purpose, I've been pleased.
