I'm no longer in calving mode, i'm in maintenance mode. I drive through my herds and watch for anyone off alone or doing anything suspicious. I come across a cow who's on the wrong side of the fence. It does have some bad areas where cows could cross, but i found it odd she'd cross because there is so much grass. Her udder was full, so i expected a calf to come running. Got a phone call so i was around her for about 15 min. I watched her walk to the pond to get a drink. I saw a big heifer run over to her. I thought, yep...but no, heifer just passed by her. A cow came up to her and rammed her in the side. I then thought, could she be from our herd down the road. All our friggen tags are unreadable now, between the dalis grass and fading, numbers are all gone. I did take a picture of it, brought it home to my computer and faintly saw what her number was. Looked her up and saw that i marked her down as open when we wormed cows a couple months ago...SOOOOO, a few hours later i went back thinking maybe she was in labor losing a 4 month fetus..
When i went back i found this. He was on the side of the fence i found her. So, why did we have a off season calf? We left one of the calves last year a bull. He was one of the younger calves so when we pulled the bulls off, we left him until we weaned. He grew so much after we pulled the bulls off, we luted all the heifers we kept out of that pasture. This cow is a big cow, very very surprised he bred her. But if anything, we get a preview of what we will get out of him next year. Her number is 225....we tattoo all their ears so they get a new number written on their tag. But next year, i want to do something else. Its almost impossible to read 90% of anyones numbers this time of year.

This is the bull....i'm guessing he really wanted the job..lol This is this summer

Last year at weaning

Fro sho......we bought a jack to break show heifers and to breed to a pony. He was small and our only mare was over 16hh.. So i never expected to get a mule out of the two...But sure enough, we did. Named him Bill. Bill was gaited and a royal pain. My husband rode him some, but Bill had separation anxiety so you always had to have someone with him. It was so bad he'd be dangerous if he got separated. It was less of a problem as he got older but no one was riding him. That was about when craigslist started and i listed him. A guy from Ft Worth came out to look at him, he planned to use him as a pack mule. We were upfront about him and it was just fine for what he was going to use him for. SO off Bill went and we all did a little dance. EVERY gate we have has Bill dents in it where he leaned on it to get to what he was locked out of. He was huge... Never ever again will we ever have a mule, or a donkey.. Eeore died a few years ago, we let him live out his life here. We used him to break show heifers, so he earned his retirement....

Had to laugh, cuz had the same type thing happen. Had a jersey cow that was confirmed preg. Then she showed a heat about 4-5 months after being "preg" (so she was about 7 months) :o :o :o . I rebred her AI and she didn't feel open inside so never got through the cervix. Lo and behold she wound up calving to the original breeding. There are just some that show heats even when pregnant. I have found over the years to be a little cautious when breeding a cow confirmed preg and not pass the rod through the cervix so as to not break the plug in case it is just hormones making her act like she is in heat. Just my :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:
