I saved 2 bred herefords. 1 has a bcs 2 i'm sure the other a 3 easy. the way the guys place looked he had no way of working the cattle so i'm sure he has'nt wormed in a while. both cows are up in age 5-8 years old my best guess. they are heavy bred so should i wait untell the calve or go ahead and worm now? i've never faced this, this time of year before. My concern stems from killing grubs and harming the cows or because their pregant and hurting the calve. any ideas are appreciated.

Use a wormer that doesn;t affect grubs and is safe for bred cows. Do it now and they'll (hopefully) get into better shape for calving or at least not suffer so much from post calving.

dun

what about ivomec plus. is that safe to give right now? to get rid of flukes. $8 per cow sure does make my wallet light.

I would be more concerned about the calves getting injured our the cow in the chute than the worming itself. if the cows aint been in one there liable to fight and fall or bang around might be best to run um through a alley and use a pour on or some safegaurd pellets then give um a good working over after they calve.

I thought about cattle wormer but i'm sure they have'nt ate cubes before kinda ruled that out. everything that i've found restricts milk cows thats about it. anybody ever use a paste?

BC 2 or 3? They are almost dead anyway. Pour-on Cydectin and clean them up. If a grub is in the wrong place well it is just bad luck.
Start them on some feed too. Not much but get them started.
Good luck and hope the cows make it.

when they calve your gonna have a new problem that is getting them in condition to rebreed with them babies chuging on the teat its gonna be a challenge .

I believe that it would be a good idea to have a vet over and check your saved cows for BVD or Johness. I hope that you are isolating them from any other cattle that you currently have. They probaly are just starving from the sound of your post , but it would be prudent to make a few test especially if they are having runny bowel movements.

Good luck

I'm fairly certain Ivomec Plus kills grubs, too. At this stage of the game it could kill the cows depending on the circumstances.

I agree with Dun. Probably won't have to run them through the chute if you have the means to corral them in a very small area to deworm - the applicator will shoot a fair distance if your aim is good. Otherwise simply run them into the alleyway to your chute (most people have an alleyway leading to the chute, so I'm assuming you do, too), don't head catch them, but be set up to go so you can apply the dewormer as they are passing through. The biggest problem I see with paste wormer is that it will require head-catching and haltering so it will put a pretty good stress load on these heavy-bred, emaciated cows. Might also want to think about a few cubes, cattle cake, or a small amount of grain to get them used to you and settle them down. A few days and you may be able to mix pelleted wormer into the grain and they might eat it - I'm not sure about this as I have no experience with pelleted wormers. Another option might be to coat the pelleted wormer with molasses, but again I don't know for sure that that would work. Just throwing out thoughts. I commend your efforts to restore these cows to health!
