I'm getting ready to construct a working facility off an existing shed/barn. The current surface is gravel. I was wondering if I need to resurface the area that will consist of the holding pens, chute, headgate, etc.? Thanks for your advice.

Gravel is a big word - wide variety of potential meanings.

Personally I think it is the worst ground you can have. Almost anything but.

What size/type of gravel? Pea-gravel, stone dust, crusher-run,rock?

Where I work, one of the working pen and corral areas was covered in geotextile cloth then covered with stone dust. They then covered with #57 (3/4 inch crushed bluestone) in the alleyways and the the outside of the chute. That set-up has worked well when having to work the cows. The areas where the people need to be stays un-mucked.

It was set up this way in an effort to control all the muck and mire in an area that tends to be damp.

I don't know that I would keep cows on that surface for days at a time though, but it makes for a decent working area.
