We recently bought a new farm with a large workshop with a covered machine shed. We are putting corral panels along the sides and will get some of that fabric that they use at home depot to black the sunlight this summer and put fans up to keep the show calves in this summer. My question is, the former owners have put the white gravel down in the shed on top of the dirt. Will this be to rough on the calves feet or would you remove the gravel and take it back down to dirt? When I locate my camera I'll take pictures and post it. Thanks.
 
I'd say they should be fine as long as they're not forced to be on it 24/7. We have "some gravel" laid down (esp. by the water drinks to keep down mud and Im not seeing any problems between 3 yr old cow, 9 month old calf and 3 horses.)
 
I wouldn tkeep them on gravel all summer, i would put down mulch so everything can drain, and they will still walk good

Sorry I was in hurry mode this morning. Reading that, if you are planning on housing the calves in the barn (say for the day and turn out at night or something) I'd definitly say put down some bedding, but if they will just be walking on it every now and then I think they'd be fine.
 
I haven't been out there much in daylight till the other night and I had been mistaken. There wasn't as much gravel as I thought. My husband has about gotten it fenced off, but we need to clean it up before we use it. Maybe I can get a picture soon if I can get home before dark!
 
I've uploaded a picture but can't get it to post here. It's been awhile and when i have more time I'll try again. Look at the picture and let me know how you would fix it for show calves.It is the one showing the covered shed with panels around it. We just bought the place and have a lot of cleaning up to do before we let the calves in there, but it's a start. All suggestions welcome.

I think if you clean it out a little, put down some bedding, add a couple fans, etc. that would be a really nice "facility" you'd have.
 
That's our intention, CPL. We are fixing to rent a dumpster and go to cleaning! Fences came first, now we are about to tackle this mess! My next question-this summer when we are keeping the heifers up during the day, would you let them loose inside the enclosure or would you tie them or keep them in individual stalls? Another thing we like about this is the building. When we finish cleaning it out, the kids can put their working chute up inside and work their calves in bad weather. We are really excited about getting this done, but with having to move and everything this hasn't been on the top of the list. As we get this done, I will post pictures of it in progress. Consider this a "before" picture!
