The woodpecker pecked out a little round hole
And made him a house in the telephone pole.

One day when I watched he poked out his head,
And he had on a hood and a collar of red.

When the streams of rain pour out of the sky,
And the sparkles of lightning go flashing by,

And the big, big wheels of thunder roll,
He can snuggle back in the telephone pole.

And when that noise making sob sticks his head back out I pop him with a 22 , END OF STORY

I did when I was small running around the hills, creeks, and ridges shooting anything that was alive.

Man, I don't like to kill anything anymore. If I hit a squirrel in the road, it bothers me for a month.

Did you quench your blood lust on those African safaris? Or just grow out of it. I confess, I don't get near as cranked up to go hunting like I used too...unless the sons want to go run through the woods chasing coon. Thrill of the hunt vs. The kill?

Yes. To an extent. I still miss the adventure. After hunting dangerous game like elephant and Cape Buffalo, you spoil yourself. Nothing matches the rush of pursuing dangerous game. I would like to hunt elephant again under similar circumstances. Not for a trophy but part of a planned culling operation.

I am a strong advocate that hunting contributes to the preservation of wildlife. But I don't have the same drive to hunt that I did.

We've had 2 flickers as pets.. pretty smart birds.

I'll knock anything off that's a pest.. starlings, robins, and the like, including bigger stuff... it's not a thrill though

Please kill all the starlings you can. But enemy number one is those Black Headed Vultures/Buzzards.

I am hearing horrible storys here on the damage they are doing. They are becoming more aggressive.

I'm with you, with age came my dislike of killing birds, animals, just simple to kill them and think I'm a good shot. That does not include crows who come into my barn for grain and anything shiny, coyotes and freezer meat.

Not sure what caused it, maybe they ate too much, but I've seen those Mexican buzzards explode on the ground and feathers go everywhere.
