I'm new to the forum but wanted to get some advice on growing winter grass. I have a small farm in southern Mississippi that I've planted rye grass for the winter. Should I put nitrogen down to give it a boost or fertilizer?
Thanks for the response. Sorry I should have said I had a soil sample done already. The PH was a 5.7...... I was just reading up and saw some people suggested adding nitrogen for a "pop" in getting the growing going a lot quicker. It suggested N - 60....Welcome to the board. A little nitrogen won't hurt but you won't really know what the soil needs without a soil sample.
I've been working on getting it up. Any suggestions on how often I should lime?If your PH is 5.7 you had better work on that now also. It takes lime several months to help.
You should add lime until you get the PH where it needs to be. Then I would advise doing a soil test every 2 years to make sure you keep it there. Others may have a different opinion.I've been working on getting it up. Any suggestions on how often I should lime?

Perfect. Thanks for the insight. I limed in May but didn't till it in so next time I'll go ahead and till it inAnd according to your soil if your not tilling it in about 2 ton per acre is all you should do with each application.
If you limed in May, get a fresh test to see what it did to change the PH.Perfect. Thanks for the insight. I limed in May but didn't till it in so next time I'll go ahead and till it in
