Don't want to hijack this thread but I guess its time to start discussing winter feeding approaches. Down here in the south we can graze stockpiled (in the ground) seasonal small grains (i.e rye, oats, winter wheat). Not sure how well that works up north though.
We had a great fall and winter here last year and I grazed rye all winter which saved my rear given the 05-06 drought. I still fed them hay also but only because I didn't want to hold it over knowing I could cut rye any time I wanted. In fact, I fed more hay last summer than I did last winter.
