Hi All,
I have a 3 year old polled Hereford steer (he is my pet - his name is Norman). He gets a severe case of dandruff every winter. I use coat conditioner spray but it only helps for one day. He is intensely itchy and I end up brushing him for an hour because I feel sorry for him. Are there any products that can cure this or that last longer?

Sounds like lice Sally.

Do you have an Agway near you ?

They may have lice powder that is easy to sprinkle on and VERY affordable.
One container will do a small herd.

Do a search on your browser for "cattle lice" and learn how the lice migrate from one end of the body to the other, as winter progresses, so you will know how to treat the cows most effectively. Also do a search for lice solutions and information, on these cattle boards, by hitting the SEARCH tab at the TOP of these pages.

READ THE DIRECTIONS on the lice powder container. It says NOT to use more than 2-4 tablespoons per cow.

Don't put on the cows if it is windy.

As your cattle lose their winter coat, the itching will greatly subside and the lice infestation will decrease.
It's at its peak the beginning of February in our neck of the woods.

When you worm your cattle in November, use an ivormectin pour on. It will kill lice for 120 days and you will notice a BIG difference next winter. Happier, healthier cattle.

I got a BIG lesson last year when my neighbors cattle had lice.

Nasty stuff.

Hope this helps,
