Why lay there

I have just let my heifers out into a seven acre pasture. I pulled up in a pile, the old hay that was in all the hay rings from last year. The pasture is green and shaded and has trees and is limed, fert., they love the grass, but they choose to lie in the old hay pile and just stay there untill it time to eat again.
Will this hay hurt them if they eat it, should I leave it there, or burn it, like I was going to do. Thanks, Little Creek.

They probably figure it's a lot softer then laying on the hard ground. If they eat it it won;t hurt them as long as they have grass they won;t eat the nastiest part of the hay. The only reason I burn it is so the grass underneath can grow.

Ditto. My cattle have done the same thing for years. Like Dun said they wont eat the bad hay if there is grass.
