If she is heavy in calf that is the most likely reason. It is not uncommon for a heavily bred cow in the last trimester to grunt and groan while she is laying down. The calf is getting large enough that it prevents her from breathing as deeply. Unless she is doing the same while she is up and about I wouldn't worry about it.

my heifer isn't heavey in calf but she is very fat as she was for a steer show with the school than i bought her she rolls her nose back when once she is down kinda like she is snorting , she dose a bit when standing up , could there be anything wrong with her?
she also licks u alot but stop that after i got her a saltblock

It is very common for any cow (when she lays down) to grunt and groan, then blow a deep breath through their nose. I don`t fell i would be worried it`s just a natural experience.
This is my, as they would say 2 cents worth.

During calving time I go out amongst the herd at night to make sure all is well. Many times they will be bedded down and walking among them I hear grunts and groans all over. Cows and bulls alike. I think they do this when relaxed. My herd bull can sound like a steam engine while he is laying down and chewing his cud. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless she shows signs if pain or struggling to breathe. If she looks relaxed then the grunting and groaning is probably because she is just that...relaxed.

thanks everyone i now understand why my cow grunts and groans, it now dosen't worry me, thanks again
