I like to listen to them. We got quite a bit of logging going on and it hasn't affected our numbers. Hear them most every night.

We still have plenty here too judging by the sound of 'em. I think I'll get me a diet Dr. Pepper and go sit in the rocking chair on the front porch and listen to the whippoorwills... and distant thunder. And smell the Jasmine and honeysuckle.

I don't think I've ever heard a Whippoorwill(sp?), and that sounds like heaven - would you happen to have an extra chair and wouldn't mind the company?

I haven't heard a whip-po-will in many years. We used
to hear them down on Gist's Creek about 30 years ago.
It's one of the most peaceful sounds one could ever
hear. Now all we hear is noise from the nearby interstate.

distant thunder?
*muching on peanuts and coke.* i havent heard whippers in a while. there used to be a few singing for hours across the road somewhere. i wonder if the wild hogs have made them move out?

Don't hear them much here but my parents farm still has them. This place is chocked full of bob-whites, though. Bob-bob-white!

 Beefy, there was a pretty good storm in the Vidalia area earlier. Very localized as far as the rain goes though. Didn't get to my pasture land. Maybe we'll get some tommorrow. To melt the fertilizer I had put out there two weeks ago.

Msscamp, sure I've got 4 rockers, so come on. I gotta tell ya though, there's a bunch of mosquitos out there this time of night. I heard one whipporwill way off. Came in the house after a few minutes and one started whistling right outside the window.

We have them coming out of our ears. They must be on speed cause they start and never stop all night long. Last year some friends of ours brought out their trailer and spent a week. The first night they ooed and aaed about ho neat it was to hear them. By the second night they were wondering if they ever shut up. The next night and the rest of the time they were here they kept the windows closed at night.
The only thing that breaks the mononotony of the constant whippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwill is the coyotes howling. When they shut up the whippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwillwhippoorwill starts again

I dont think the hogs really have an effect on them, cause I still hear em' all the time. Everyone is right though, hearing Whipporwills and watching the fireflies on a moonlit night down on the river and hearing the water flowing and the frogs all at the same time is probably pretty close to heaven.

We start hearing them in April every year. No shortage here! Remember Hank Williams' words?......"Hear that lonesome whippooorwill. He sounds to blue to fly. The midnight train is whining low. I'm so lonesome I could cry." Man, he could write a song! (BTW, he was an Alabamian!)

We have plenty around here. It is a beautiful sound but I guess I tend to take it for granted since there is no shortage of it. I'm sure I would miss it if they stopped.

They are pretty funny looking little things.

You are right about that. One woke me up very early one morning, he (she?) was sitting on the roof right outside the bedroom window and I HAD to get up to look. Very hunched down, whole body moving as it called. So glad I finally got to see one up close...that was the only time. I love their call.

Found some sounds on the net for those who would like to listen to one. Hope this works right.

I have jumped a few nesting in the woods. Of course, I don't know who "jumped" the highest.

Whippoorwills are bad enough, the ones that make me jump out of m skin are the night hawks. They will sit right there until your foot is ready to land on them, then they take off.
