Which one

Do you guys prefer brangus, beefmaster, or senepol cattle for a commercial operation and why for wich one you choose over the other ones.

Never tried a Senepol, don?t wish to either, and out of the two remaining I prefer the beefmster.

We tried some senepol thru AI when we were first crossing belgian blue for calving ease. Took one for the fair during my show years too. The carcasses are pretty lean, the meat was almost purple from the bb cross.
Don't know if this helps you or not.
Thought the animals were pretty decent handling wise, calm, my steer was really easy to break, was a little sad to see him go cause he was so good.
I know they are supposed to have good immunity too.
Wouldn't have minded getting more but our AI company discontinued it.

Beefmaster, well I breed them. I had some Brangus cross cows. A little to dicey for me. I like to call them low maintenance cows. Very Goog mommas, beefmasters. Just have to watch sheath and underline.

I am actually located in southern South Dakota. I was thinking of just trying this a few times with AI to see how it turned out. Nothing on a big scale because it probably will not work out but i would still like to see. My thought was to take some type of tough hairy type cow and AI to some of the type of cattle i really like in hopes it would hair them up some more and make them work in my area. It is common for us to be in the teens and twenties with wind during the winter. But i really liked some bulls i seen from a few places.

I also saw some bulls i liked from http://www.sacramentofarms.com as well.
Last of the three i do see some beefmaster bulls i have liked the looks of as well. But mostly from them i really liked some bulls from wynne ranch and sacramento farms. I know they are not really made for our area but doesnt really stop me from really liking them cows i do see. Also there are some people that have some ear in their cattle because they bought a bunch from down south last year and they seem to be doing fine as well so far. I figured if got something like a galloway saler or a nice old style type hereford cow to start with. Then AI them to one of these type bulls to see how the females turn out. Then try and come back over those cross bred females with a charolaise bull or even a high growth terminal angus bull that would have equivalent growth to a charolias sire.
I get it probably is practical and i wouldnt be doing it on any big terms but i figured maybe 25 head or so AI them so i could see what the females looked like.
This is why i am wondering from wich of the three breeds do you guys like and for what reason. In terms for a crossbred situation like im saying to porduce a mother cow to be bred terminal. I hope this explains a little better.

Are senepol more terminal type sire than a maternal sire or why one of those two for cows.

to be honest, i dont know anything about senepol cattle... dont remember having seen one in person.. but brangus and beefmaster cows, work great in both terminal and maternal realms...

if i were in the northwest and forced to use a eared breed, beefmaster would be my choice...

their able to put on more fat cover, and a little more hair coat...from the hereford and shorthorn influence

My thought is since the makeup of a Beefmaster is kinda questionable (can we prove a beefmaster is 1/2 Brahma, 1/4 short, 1/4 herf) no, known percentages are unkown, the hereford and shorthorn in the beefmaster might work, and since the Lasater Ranch is in Colorado, use his genetics. I few years ago I talked with a breeder who talked with Tom Lasater, in the 70's, he got the impression that the exact % was unknown. But he liked what he saw, that why he switched to Beefmaster.

So then I ask the question when you start breeding a certain Phenotype does that start elminating the undiserable phenotype, does that % phenotype representing lets say brahma, begin to get bred out? :2cents:

I like his phenotype cattle better than alot I see in the breed magazine. The have less ear, less sheath, less loose skin and he!! of a lot of mass and muscle :cboy:


We know Brangus is 5/8 Angus. He is trying something different, to play, see how it works.

total hearsay, but I've heard that Senepol & some senepolx have a problem puttin on a coat when in cold weather, that feedyards didn't like em just for that reason. We know that a 3/16 brahman influenced animal will still coat up just fine, so I'd go with either the brangus or beefmaster over the senepol.

when your first in line, you get to sit where you want.... when he was building the breed he was selecting for traits he wanted... the biggest problem was when they were released to the general public, in breeding up programs,... beefmaster is a mongrel held together with a thin string...

So than if a person was to try this beefmaster is the way to go. Also look at lasater ranch as they have ones raised in a similiar climate to what i will have since they are in colorado.
