I have one cow riding another, the one being ridden simi stands (few seconds and moves away) No visable signs of swollen vulva, or mucus yet from either of them. The rider is due to come in heat not sure about the ridee as she could be bred.
no bull available, as planning on A.I. ing

Thanks

If she stands at all to be ridden and doesn;t run off or turn to fight she's in heat.

slightly curled hair in that area,
What would it hurt if I went ahead and A.I. ed her? other than the loss of a straw???

I know this sounds super obvious, but I'll throw it out there - not trying to offend anyone. If a heifer/cow will stand still to be mounted (by another cow, a steer, or a bull), it's referred to as "standing heat". This is normally where the bull will go to work. She is ready for service.

Chalk up another one for Dun.

I've seen pregnant cows stand. Not very common but I've seen it.

Agreed. If she will stand for any length of time - she is the one in heat. They get very "indignant" if a cow tries to ride them and they are NOT in heat.
No, it does not "hurt" anything. You are just out your $$. If you are not in a hurry, you could mark it down on the calendar & watch for another heat in 17-24 days. (17-20 if a heifer 20-24 if a cow - of course the is "usually")
Whether you breed her or not, you should mark it on your calendar & be ready to watch for a return heat.
