Hi all,
I wanted to get a few takes on what the best breed of bull to use on an Angus cow or and Angus X cow would be. Maine/Chi/Angus or a straight shorthorn? I want to know what would make both a good show calf and would also make a good keeping cow. To give you some help, it's Sin City and SULL Sinister up against Hairy, Hairy Bear, Rocky Balboa and Who Made Who.
Thanks,
MYT

What kind of angus cows do you have? The best steer makers don't make the best cows most of the time.

If I was going to try and make some clubby cows that still might make decent range cows I'd use Chill factor,Which doctor,Draft Pick,(younger cheaper bull you might try is Intense Plus). You could use a good 734 son,but you would need the belly dragger type angus cows for it to work good. There are some good WMW cows but I would only breed him to super sound cows.Imo your wasteing your time using clubby bulls on avg. old cows unless your going to keep the heifers for club calf cows as your steers won't be that great on avg. and you loose some lbs come weaning and no one at the sale barn wants a pen of steers that are hairy as yaks. The club calf thing is pretty competitive anymore if want the big money you need to have the best of that kind of cattle and you need to be able to sell most of your calves to show people.Go hang out at the national western in jan for a few days and talk to those guys you'll learn alot.

I certainly understand that things are getting competitive, which is why I'm starting to bring in better show genetics. I've got a good base under my brood cow battery. In fact, one of the cows I have as a potential A.I.er won Grand Champion pair at the county show. If anything, I'm hoping that the bulls don't ruin my cow herd! :lol2: Plus, my steers are sold after they get finished, so I don't usually worry too much about them having too much hair. But I've been in the show ring for 6 years and took 4 steers and a heifer to show last year, so I understand the undertaking of going towards show genetics.
