found a cow with afterbirth but no calf...another cow had a bloody rear end and a new calf..the cow with no calf is following the pair around like the calf may be hers,. I have searched the pasture over and can find no dead calf...I'm wondering if the second cow may have been near when the calf was born and assumed it was hers? or some other kind of mix up??..the calf is sucking what may not be her mother, who is due any day if this is not her calf....have never seen anything like it before???
 
Yep.....just had this happen this week. Had a cow calf (I know for sure it is her calf) two days later the calf is with another cow nursing and the real mother running around like crazy trying to igure out what is going on. I just pinned the calf and the real momma up and thats all she wrote. But in your case, sence the other cow was bloody behind, you never know it could be hers. Good luck with them...
 
easy way to find out.....pen up 'adoptive' mum and run and arm down the rectum.................if she is still due to calve, you should feel it in there........and thus take the right steps to make the switch, as you sure don't want this calf sucking all of her colustrum out.

If no calf is bedded in there, then check other mum just to be sure her calf is out, and then at least you will know you simply have a lost calf, even as bad as that is...mystery would be somewhat resolved as to whom did or didn't.

calf floated to top of the creek saturday...we had looked very hard...apparently the calf slid into the creek as soon as it was born..the mama didn't know the calf ever existed...
 
Man, that's a bad situation. I had that happen a month ago. Cow gave birth in a bottom next to a creek. The creek only had about 4 inches of water but the calf stumbled into it and drowned.
Made me sick for a week.
 
That sure is a bad deal real sorry for your loss.
I have an ol black baldy that at calving time you really have to keep an eye on her.She seems to think she needs every new born in the pasture. Also have had calfs who don't care what moma they nurse on they just want that free meal.
