I have a group of 30 black angus heifers that I am going to A.I. in December. Where is the best place to sell a group of this size? I dont think superior will sell a group of 30 since its not a truck load, didn't know what my other options are. These are nice fancy heifers never been off the farm that will fit in anyone's program.

Seems like people are asking big money for them on cattle range, if those cattle are selling close to the advertised prices I would put them on there.

I'll second what DMF said.

There's a little old man in Greensburg, KY who runs a "bred heifers for sale" ad on the Cattle Range year 'round and he does very well with it. We bought 15 from him in 2012 and they turned out to be a good group.

I'd also give Craig's List a try.

If you want to try through a sale barn call David Gregory at Carthage. He can get some cattle sold really high a lot of the time and will usually set a pretty high floor on your cattle if they are good.

In TN its a lucky year if you have some good bred heifers to sale, with the enhancement money I think folks are gonna be looking for good bred heifers. They have to be 90 days bred so probably March before you can market them, id use Craigslist for a short time then try and get them in the bred heifer sale in Guthrie(depending on where you are) they always have a really good sale I think sometime in May.

Thanks for the info guys! I plan on posting the heifers after they are preg. checked on craigslist and cattle range. I have another group of about 40 to a.i. in the spring and sell those so I would like to have these sold at least by April. These are nice all black heifers that will average 900 lbs at time of breeding. I see prices from 2,200 to 3,000 in my area. What do you gentlemen think is a good price to put on a nice group of all blacks bred to a top Calf Ease and Low Birth weight reg. Angus bull? And also what would a group like this bring in a sale? I have never sold a bred heifer through a sale.

Depending on how quickly you want to sell the I would say 2500 would be a good price on top end short bred heifers. Might get 2750 if you are willing to wait a while for them to sell. In Guthrie they generally have been bringing 2500 and up on the West Ky Select bred heifer sales, and I think they topped out around 3500 last sale. If you sell in Guthrie they have to meet certain requirements as far as pelvic size and stuff. Other sales if you just call the owner or manager they can probably tell you what they will bring. The reason I suggested Carthage is because if David tells you what they are gonna bring he will buy them all before he lets them bring less than that.

I always wonder when I look on Cattle Range and see these prices who is actually buying these $3,500 commercial bred heifers and what their income projections look like to justify the initial cost. Same goes for the cattle pages on Facebook. The same guys on there will have a different set of 100-250 bred heifers "straight off the farm, not put together" every week. Ha ha

To the OP, I'd try all the previously mentioned venues. Craigslist seems to work pretty well around here if you don't mind the tire kickers. I prefer to ask a little less than top market value on things I sell on Craigslist or anywhere else so that one of the first people that comes to look buys and I don't have to deal with a hundred lookers.

Thanks guys im going to try the craigslist and cattlerange and if I have problems moving them maybe David in Carthage can help. Really appreciate you cattlemen giving me your feedback, this board is a lot of help!
