I have two acres. I want to have a cow calf pair. Where do I start, and what is a good price to buy them. I don't need advise on the land, just the animals. Please advise....

You don't state your location, but I would start by talking to my county extension office and see what the land will support and what his suggestions might be as to breed. I also wouldn't get just 1 pair, I would look into 2 pair as they are herd animals and do better with a buddy. Price is going to depend on breed, condition, quality, popularity, etc. You may want to think about hanging out at the local barn for a week or so and seeing what sells, what doesn't and for how much. Then, with that information you would probably want to start looking at ad's and talking to cattleman with cattle for sale. Registered will sell for more than commercial in most cases. Lots of good people on here that will add more. Good luck!

PS Do your research carefully and stay away from the breeds that have a tendency to be crazy! Also, as a good friend told me, when you are getting ready to purchase - walk among them. If they throw their heads up, run from you, or look like they could become aggressive - leave them there! If you are walking quietly among them, they should move away but not run.

Thanks, thats the kind of info i'm looking for!

Something else, since you are looking specifically for pairs and it sound's like you might not have a lot of practical exerience with cattle (pulling calves, for instance), I would stay away from 2 and 3 year olds. Although any animal can have problems calving, the incidence is typically highest in 2 year-olds, and a little higher than average in 3's. I mention this because most cows with a calf at their side are probably going to be bred back already.

Hey Scott...you can have alot of fun chasing cows around a two acre field. I'd invest in a few portable panels, you can make some feed bunks, easy pens and alleys and quickly rearrange to suit your needs and can fashon a cow squeeze if you have some big friends. Do you have a mentor that can give you a hand selecting cows that have the desired traits, you will probably make a friend for life and save yourself alot of fustration and $$ setting up your operation.
Msscamp is right on as usual...my son and I walked among a pen of yearling bulls when we selected our current model, even had the daddy in with them, not a turned back ear or thrown head among them...red angus, but looking for dostile cattle is the key IMO, good luck. DMc
