How many chances do you all give a cow to settle? I have a Dandy of a Black cow that I have seen my Hereford bull breed at least three times between July and now,I've always thought she looks to good to be the real deal. Is it time for to get mobile? :cry2:

I run commercial cows and my mommas only get a 60-75 day breeding window. We preg check by pulling blood and ship what's open.

A lot of people will say 3 times and then move 'em. Around here I've seen a lot of cows not settle through the summer because of the heat, have a couple myself on their fourth service (AI). You might want to semen check your bull also as it might not be the cows fault.

I don't think it's the bull cause shes running with 14 other cows that all settled just fine. My father always told me that the ones that look to pretty to be a cow proably aren't. I guess he might be right.

My :2cents: , you like the cow, figure out the due date from the last witness breeding, if the calf is in your acceptable calving period for your calf crop then give her some more time. If not or she's still open in 21 days ship her. Not much more frustrating than feeding an open cow all winter just to ship her in the spring.

One breeding period for the bull and twice for AI - if she preg checked open?

In my herd this one would be told - "Time for you to go"

I have a 4 yr. old now that I considered one of the nicer ones. Noticed Bull on her at 90 days. That's getting too far out of synch with others for me.
If I felt like I really had to have her I would treat as TB posted and see what come of that. I considered rolling her to the fall group but will probably let her go.

If they don't breed within a 60-75 day window with natural service... they're gone... UNLESS they are 2-3 year olds... then they are allowed 1 strike... it's a 2 strike your out ball game.

If she has cystic ovaries... why would you keep her knowing that the problem will keep recurring? ditch her and her genetic line.

got mine down to 45 days preg check and load them did keep a really good purebred for 1 1/2 yrs trying to get her breed she would stick check bred then slip the calf around 30 days every time she taught me a lesson if they dont get bred there costing you money so there gone.

Because normally there is only one ovary with a cyst.
With more expensive registered cattle I would always have the vet palpate them for cysts before they were shipped.
Or I would just use the cidr, lute, and cystrelin method for AI. You don't have to AI. Just put them back with the bull.

By all means have a preg /health check if she is that valuable. I have seen cows "come in heat" and they were bred.
On the other hand, I have seen cattle health check out fine, and they wouldn't breed, or they would breed and slip the calf and then start all over again, and no understandable reason could be found. Eventually they were given horomones and are now in calf.
One has to decide how valuable the cow is, and through that decide how long to keep trying or ship out.
That said, if the cow is in a very large herd and only one bull, he might be chasing another cow in standing heat during the brief time that your cow is standing, and miss her.

The heritability of cystic ovaries is fairly low but the very best way to geneticlly improve low heritability traits is to have zero tolerance for failure in that trait. I would neve buy from a seedstock producer if I found out that they used GNRH to solve a fertility problem. I see it's place in the commercial setting but any daughters that result should be culls regardless of what they look like.

Yes indeed.... I worked with a big old cow once that cycled regular year round.

Boss kept fussing at me because I had a cow in heat in the examined bred cow group. Get her up and check her again at the next vet visit. Safe in calf..... Then haul her back to the bred group.

repeat the whole process about monthly.

Ship her! If she is a slow breeder will always be a slow breeder. No use for them if they do not breed within the 60-75 day window. Over the life of the early breeder compared to the slow breeder will equal more calves on the ground for the early girl. Just not worth the money or time to mess with a slow breeder here on our farm!
