What's your line in the sand for accuracy?

Looking at using a Hereford bull on black heifers. I do realize heterosis on birth weight.

This calf crop will be sired by Victor 719T. He is .3 on bw @ 93% with a c.e.d. of 7.8 @ 73%. The bull I'm considering is R294. He is -1.3 bw @ 83% & 10.7 c.e.d. @ 83%.

Talked with gene rep about the abs (R294) bull. He though a person would be alright. I like both bulls. I feel comfortable with the first bull, but leaning towards the second.

Thus the question.......when looking through ai books, what is your line for accuracy when selecting a bull?

.5 I'm fairly comfortable with but prefer .7 or higher. We've used R294 for several years No issues with calving ease and they are fairly stylish steers that do well at the local county fairs as market steers. ADG and carcass carry a lot of influence at the fairs for final placement. They've had very good marbling and rib eye.

Ya, I talked to a guy last night that used R294 as a 3rd cross with Angus & Irish Black. Out of 40 hd, maybe helped a couple because of a foot back etc. Said they used R294 & a simmental on heifers. He is bolder than I am! :tiphat:

If you're interested his daughters out of red angusXGelbvieh and Red AngusxSimmenthal are excelent cows.

I've used a lot of his half brother, domino 3027 on heifers and don't have any complaints yet and most of the heifers are solid black so that includes heterosis. R294 is very, very similar so I'd expect the calves to be as well.

Plenty of Simmental sires I'd use - and have used - on heifers.
F'rinstance: Triple C Bettis(at Accelerated) - I'd breed him to anything, with no worries - they come tiny; problem I've had is that the growth on 'em is nothing like what his epds suggest; live calves, but they haven't amounted to much here - granted, they've all been out of first-calf heifers... Once I've used up what I have in the tank, I'm probably not getting any more of him.

Im sure there are calving ease simmentals, chars, gelveigh, etc. I had a heifer that was full gelveigh bred to angus. I didn't think the calf was quite as vigours as others. 1 critter don't give a very good test either.
