Guns are good tools.
I was out of town most of the day and before I got home I needed to drop some things off by the barn. As I approached the barn I noticed something odd on the side of the road near the gate that leads to the barn. I did a U-turn and put my brights on the shape and discovered it was a bicycle with a small wagon hooked to it. The bike had bags of stuff tethered all over it. Fishing rods, clothes just all sorts of stuff. It looked like a mobile trash heap. I turned the truck a bit and saw a shape laying in the tall grass by the fence and then I figured it was a hobo type person and he moved so I left him alone.
After unloading stuff in the barn the thought of someone down on their luck with all their worldly belongings strapped to a bicycle kept gnawing at me. I thought of the golden rule and began packing a bag with bread, crackers and some cured salami and meat sticks. As I left I pulled the truck over to where the bike was parked and asked if anyone was there. From the shadows came a Yes. (now keep in mind this is 11:00 pm and there is no lights out this way and it was a bit spooky) I then asked if he needed some food which was answered with a very eager "yes". Anyhow, I got out of the truck - told Eli to stay, and walked over to the bike and hung the food bag on the handle bars. He was very appreciative and we talked a little. Turns out he had ridden his bicycle all the way up from Daytona and along the way he was hit by a car once and had his dog run over as well.
The reason I say guns are good is that had I not had my LCP in my back pocket this man would have gone hungry because I doubt I would have risked getting involved. But as it turns out, I was able to help a complete stranger in an awkward situation. Of course Eli had my back all it would have taken was one word and he would have been on this guy like white on rice but I seriously doubt I would have put myself in this position without the hi-capacity zombie slaying tool I had in my back pocket. (OK, I'm a wuss) So I guess you could say this tool served a very good purpose without even having to be fired or seen. Why someone would ever want to take this away from me is beyond reaon and for the homeless guy - it would simply be cruel.
