WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER

i guess i'll take the good cows and the average bull. i can always get a better bull.

SO DOES THIS MEAN THAT OVER TIME IT WILL BE THE BULL THAT IMPROVES THE HERD RATHER THAN THE COWS. I ONLY HAVE 6 PED FEMALES AT THE MOMENT AND AN AVERAGE BULL ( HEREFORDS). I WOULD LIKE TO INCREASE THE HERD WITH SOME GOOD FEMALES BUT I HAVE ALSO SEEN A NICE BULL. I COULD BUY 2 COWS AND 2 CALVES OR 1 COW AND CALF AND 1 BULL. WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY FORWARD

Even if it means forfeiting the chance to buy the cows & calves, rather buy a great bull. You can always add more cows later. You really don't want to build a herd around a substandard bull

lots of different ways you could go about this.

you need a good bull.
how and when to get one is the question.
how long have you had the one you have now? how easy are good females/pairs to come by there? are all your cows bred currently? will any of the pairs you are looking at have potential herdbull calves at side? could you get cows now and use some calves you raise this year/old bull to buy a better bull next year? do you need him around thru the winter? how average are his calves?

I'd go with the good bull. He's half of every calf. You can retain heifers that are better than their mommas. It's probably also cheaper than replacing all your cows. On the other hand, if you're talking about registered cattle, you need to consider an AI program.

I agree with this. If you have good cows you can go AI and the odds are you may be able to retain a good bull for your own. If you do not have good cows you can still AI and come up with a good bull but the odds are less. If you do not want to go the AI get a good bull.
