I got a simangus x saler heifer that is 2 mo bred to a calving ease Saler bull. Yea great right? Well she's only 9 mo old. Actually she will be 1 on April 22. She's an EZ 750lbs right now. Nice and long and deep body. Her moms about a 1400lb cow that always calves without trouble. So would u give her a shot or let her have it? Wasn't a planned breeding. She got back n with her mom after I separated them for weaning. She's weaned now.

1st off i dont like using lute an wont.because i feel it may cause breeding probs later on.2nd ive calved heifers at 19 months with no prob.an weve been lucky in that way.so to answer your q with a 750lb id gamble an calve her out.because the odds are she will weigh 850 to 900lbs at calving.

I'd let her go with the way you describe her. Sounds like she shouldn't have too much trouble and being shes at least 2 months along, I would try to not use lute if at all possible.

size is good in 6 more months she will be alittle bigger chances are she has it fine, just don't overfeed her and all should be well.

Hmmm. If she's REALLY 750 now, she'll probably do OK. I've got yearlings, bred in Nov, some of which aren't much heavier than that(weighed 'em last weekend, was surprised that they were that low...).
But, calving at 14 months isn't what we'd be shooting for here.
A 2-month fetus and membranes will barely be noticeable(if you even see it!) if you abort her, and certainly won't set her back any. The shot of lutalyse/estrumate will cause no long-term issues with breeding; won't be any different than if she spontaneously aborted.

I was looking at her close today and no doubt she's at least 750lbs. So I'm thinking in the next 7 1/2 months surely she can hit 900 and would be 16+ months old. What I don't know about is there more to it than just size? I mean internally. Pelvic and such. Should probably really just sell her and add a few hundred and buy a heavy bred cow.that would make the most sense but i sure like her and her mom and this is the first heifer she's given me.

Guess the odds would be 50:50??

Sounds accurate. Give her the shot, 50:50 isn't good odds with what she is worth alive.
;-) That way all you lose is 2-3 months and she'll be old enough to breed.

Way I see it she has two strikes against her for being a heifer.
I am with you 50/50 at best.

Give her a shot of prostaglandin ( and dexamethasone,10ccs just to be sure as she could be close to the 3 month bred mark) She should abort with no problems and you can re breed "properly" her on schedule at 15 months olds .

We estrumate and dex all of our heifers and never have a problem with them rebreeding on time( touch wood ;-) )

Good luck !

I think the chances of her giving a live calf are better than 50/50... but what concerns me, especially if she's a good animal, is how she will grow after and mature... If you think she'll make a really good cow, I'd give her lute and breed her back when it's time to breed her, and she'll do much better for you in the years to come, If she's not so nice, I'd say let her have this calf, feed her well while she milks and wean the calf early, she'll probably always be small and never reach her full potential.

We had one calf at about 14 months and she never did produce a good calf in the 5 years we kept her.

When you lute a heifer, how long will it take for her to breed back? Would she breed back on the next heat? I ask because the neighbor kept a heifer for the first time, she is about 13 months old, and running in the herd (bull out year round). If she gives this heifer Lute, is it like when you cycle the cow and she will abort and come in heat in a few days? And what if she is bred on that heat? Since they are "no maintenance" (will not even go there!), the heifer will ALWAYS be in the pasture with the bull so my guess was to give her Lute at 14 months so she can breed naturally then.....
Thanks

I would lute her but not because I'd worry about her size. For me there's a bunch of money to be made or lost in having them calve within a certain window and a heifer like this one would be to far out of that window to get her to fit in the future without holding her over at some point in the future. I'd rather slip her and get her into the correct window right up front than try to correct it later.
