Here's the deal, culled the herd pretty hard this past year to help make ends meet from unemployment and some unforseen emergency type expenses.
What I have left,
(4) brangus cows heavy bred, 8-10 years old
(1) braford cross cow, heifer calf on ground, 8-10 years old
(2) baldys heavy bred, 3 years old
(1) Angus/Brangus cross Bull/ 1 year old, retained from previous Reg. Angus bull and a brangus cow. Decent looks no proof on performance.
All of this years calves would not be related to my new bull.
I am looking to increase the size and quality of the herd to 25-30 head. Interested in baldys as they do well in the salebarn here. Found a local fellow who has good looking purebred herefords and another that raises nice reg. hereford bulls who also does A.I. work.
Should I start slow buying young hereford cows/heifers and sell existing herd to buy those and upgrade my Angus type Bull, or the other way around. I am not in a hurry, within a 5yr period I would like to be close to my goals. Any advice, pros and cons, would be appreciated.
