What would you do if a bull died

Just found out that that the bull we bred one of our heifers to died. Don't know whether to breed back to him or not for next year. Registered stock, and he was a pretty well proven bull. Calves frequently sold in the $3-6000 range. I don't know why he died. He was only a 5 year old.

btw...Most semen companies have no more. We have some semen and know where I can buy more.

What would you do?

Wait to see what his calves do. Then sell or use the semen.

If I'm reading this correctly, you have only one heifer bred to this bull? If this is the case - you stated that this bull was 'pretty well proven', and you obviously found something about him that you liked or you wouldn't have bred that heifer to him - I believe I would breed a couple of my other good (not necessarily best, depending on what I thought of this bull and his 'proven' performance) heifers/cows to him just to have a broader base of comparison, wait for the animals to calve, analyze the calves and decide what, if anything, they are going to bring to my short and long term herd and goals and then go from there. Just my thoughts.

The bull is a red Limousin - Mags Kaboom.

Are any limi people out there?

Just wanted to know if death would influence decision to use or not use regardless of breed.

if you knew the cause of death it might. if hes a good known bull i would either use it or hang on to it for a while. keep it until you see how the calves turn out at least, i'd say.

I believe the most important thing in this case is the cause of death. I would get an answer on that before I made any rash decisions.

Nice bull. How much was the semen a straw. If he is a good producer and you are getting that for his calves. If its only $100 a straw I would buy 15-25 because it will increase and you want to get ahold of it before it goes up more.

If I bought straws from a bull that had passed on to the big pasture in the sky, I would still use them. If he is a good bull, his lineage needs to continue on. If he has had good babies, I might want to add some of his offspring to my herd. I might add that he is a good lookin' bull.

If this bull satisfies the criteria you have set and he is still availiable then continue to use him, unless of course the cause of death is anything you should be concerned about.
I would not however pay over the odds for semen from a dead bull on account of that bull becoming "rare" as a result of no longer producing. There will always be other good bulls out there, almost certainly better ones becoming availiable all the time.

We use a bull extensively that died a number of years ago as a 3 year old. Broken leg on range while doing natural service. I won;t hold it against him that he may have been clumsy

Im a Limi breeder . I doubt MAGS Kaboom ever gets wildley popular since he is red.I know that he was a good Milk epd and scrotal bull . He is homo polled , but there are alot of Dakota sons out there. I would use the semen and retain the good heifers in my herd . Maybe consider flushing your best cow or two if you really like his calves. I doubt the semen goes very high . It may see $50 but I doubt it.

I would keep using it like I had originally planned. IT might become rare and become worth more; but in all likelihood his owner is sitting on 5000 straws which he will be selling for the next 30 years. There are SO many good bulls to select from that I would not think that he is going to increase in value even if he does become scarce. IF you really think he is that good, keep your last 10 straws in the tank for the next 15 years and find out if the price has inflated (I doubt it but crazier things DO happen).

I originally selected him because of his maternal qualities. We are building a herd and will retain heifers. Plus I like reds. The fact he was homo polled was good also. A flush, maybe.
