My family has about 120 acres of land that we put a small number of cattle. It has plenty of grass and water, does anyone know the max amt of cattle that we could put there. Also if I want to buy a small number around 3 to 5 what breed would bring back the most profit if i put little money in to them after i purchase them?

Depnds on the climate/location, types and quality of grass, local market, etc. Way to many variables without a bit more information

would simbrah be a good choice as well? how much would 5 brangus cost me ?

Simbra would be a good choice but I know alot of people getting out of the breed because they dont sell for that much. He sold some pretty good cows for $1500 a piece when in my mine I think they were worth around $2500. He sold them to a man starting a commercial herd. The buyer bought a brangus bull from Camp Cooley to put on these cows. I got a few brangus for sale what are you looking for.

right now i think commercial might be the best way for me to go, anyone know where i could find some good looking commercial cattle?

here is a link to some classified ads in the Weekly Livestock Reporter. i'm not sure if there are any close to you, but i'll let you sort through 'em instead of spending my time:

and here is a calendar to some sales (some of the purebred bull sales will be selling commercial females, too)

& here's a link to a replacement sale:

Go to one of the closest evil, dirty salebarns and let the market operator hook you up with somebody to buy you some good, gentle, thin, solid-mouthed cows that are short-bred. It is almost always cheaper to pay buying commission than to wade into a new sale and butt heads with guys who are there every week, so be sure you get somebody to buy them for you.

Quit worrying about what color to get, or what breed to get, and all the other registered cow preaching you'll find around here. Pay attention to disposition, not color or breed. That will be a lot more important to you. Worm 'em and turn 'em out. You will probably need to supplement protein through the winter, but 120 acres should have plenty of pickings left on it for a few cows. Don't wait until the big cow runs are over and cows go back up if you want to make profit.

Does anyone know if i go to a sale barn and ask someone that works there what i am looking for, if they will help me or do i have to just wait for them to run them thru the auction?

It depends on the auction. Some are noted for their customer service and will actually tell you what pens have what you want so you can go look at them and will give you an approximate time that they will go through the sale and OTHERS really are not so nice and can be much less helpful. A lot of sales around here have cattle showing up from 24 hours pre-sale to three hours after the sale starts so ESPECIALLY this time of the year when everybody is clearing out pastures with the approach of frost it can be very HECTIC and they really aren't as well organized as in the other 10 months of the year when the pens are much less crowded. Show up 2 or 3 hours presale and HOPEFULLY the office will refer you to someone who is helpful.

Maybe someone on this board is close to you and might be willing to go with you to help. It wouldn't hurt to ask.
