My 3 heifers are at the neighbors getting bred, when they come back there is going to be 5 since I got two more. these are all first calf heifers. I have fenced off part of my hay ground and the stuff is lush red clover and timothy about mid thigh high. They wont be here for another month or so so if I cut the regrowth wont be great. should I cut? or let them have at it?

If it were me, I would cut it. Actually if you don't cut it, you have more of a chance of eye problems. Were you going to wait til they were on it before you cut it? You will sure need the hay.

I would cut it also you still have a month I regrowth. It being that high has lost some nutrition in it also cows don't like really tall feed they are likely to trample as much or more than they actually eat if you don't cut it.Nothing like tall beautiful grass to make the most comfy bedding.

This is the double edged sword deal. If you don;t cut it they may not eat it well becasue of it's maturity plus the chance for eye irritation that could bring on pinkeye. If you cut it, being cool season grasses, this time of year you won;'t get adequate growth to feed them. Brush hog it so that you take off about a third of the grass leave height. You still won;t get regrowth but at least there will be something to eat.
