In Texas they show steers by breed characteristics. A fakeford is a hereford marked animal that is not of pure herf decent. Typically animals with maine anjou and shorthorn breeding have a good shot of following color patterns of the dam. The Reserve grand champion steer at Louisville two years ago had perfect Hereford markings but was at best 1/8th herf.

They seem to imply in their sale mag that these "Hereford Like" cows can have calves that can be shown as Herefords. How much of this goes on?

I must be cutting edge. I have a "fakeford" at home, 3/4 hereford 1/4 holstein and she looks a great deal like the heifer pictured. She is much thicker and moderate framed then I would have expected. I was keeping her to use as a recip but if anyone needs her I would let her go for $9,500. Delivery included.

The only "implying" I know of is that a Hereford appearing steer will classify as Hereford down south. It's just the way they do things. I guess I don't really see any probably with people breeding for Hereford cross show steers, but I always wondered what they do with their heifer calves. What are the chances that any of them end up with an AHA reg. #?
