What I am seeing at auctions today

Watched sales in NC, TN, KY, AR, and Mo, so far today. 400 weight black steers sold for $2.90 a lb today, and that was the highest prices I have seen. Other color steers and all heifers brought a LOT less. Only thing I saw that broke $3 was a 135lb black calf at $3.07. Wonder why the drop since last week?
Ozark Regional had plenty over 3$

Calves that size usually go onto grass. We are at the point of summer where grass slows down and looses its vigor. For lots of the country, cool weather is 45 days away where grass quits completely. To early to be collecting light weight calves for wheat.
Also a lot of calves at this time of year are over filled with grass bellies. They fall apart if not long weaned and most 400 lb'ers aren't.

Summer slump ? Waiting on cooler weather about shipping ?
I think supply is more than demand right now. Every sale I watched had as many or more head than usual. Once this surplus is bought up and slaughtered, I think we will see another boost in prices that may go higher than the high point this year so far.

@MurraysMutts , did you see where they are getting in a bunch of older cows, 9 yrs or so, that have calves?,. He said those cows were so big, they were going to split the pairs, and they'd have 40 something calves to sell.
2200 plus head today.

Over 400 cows. They split a LOT of pairs there. I'm sure there will be a baby or two.

Supposed to be around 400 unweaned calves as well.

Should be a good sale!

All of that is not commission, Federal and state check off , insurance ; probably close to $15-20 per head . The $40 was probably hauling . So I figure closer to $50 per head on commission ?
