I generally background hiefers this tme of year, i have switched up my feed mix to ground ear corn, ddg, and ground alfalfa what else would you guys recomend for added gain.

Helps to know where you are so as to know what is available. How much of each of these ingredients are you formulating into your mix. ??

I am from central ky, this mix consists of 1500lbs ear corn, 300lbs alfalfa 18%, 50lbs ddg, 50lbs dried molasses. The calves have free choice grass hay and mineral.

Very high energy feed. I'd pull the molasses out and replace it with corn. It serves no useful purpose and runs up your overall cost of your feed. Just make sure they eat plenty of the hay.

Would you recommend something different, I'm trying to get a good mix for gain but also have seen gain in my input. What did you mean buy eat plenty of hay? Really love the advice

You need to get as many pounds of hay and/or grazed grass into them as you do the grain mix or they can develop acidosis, go off feed, destroy your program. Either that OR cut back on the corn, increase the DDG to raise the protein and add about 250 lbs. of cottonseed hulls to the mix to force feed them some fiber and maintain proper rumen function.
