That's what we do. The heifers bring a premium as replacements; the steers aren't bad, either!Hereford and make super baldies in my area.
Are they commercial or registered? There is a 40 year old Brangus operation up here by me, 3rd largest Brangus ranch in the country, Salacoa Vallery, that has recently added Ultra Blacks to their program. Ultra Blacks are gaining popularity rapidly among those who want a little less ear than Brangus. If your cows are registered Brangus, and you use a reg AAA Angus bull, then your Ultra Blacks an d be registered. UB steers will sell for as much or more than any other kind, and people are buying the heifers for brood cows. A client of mine in south Ga and south Ala has been experimenting with about 100 or so of his registered Brangus cows. He bred some to registered Black Herford bulls, about 40 for fall calves last year, and about the same for the spring calves in February. He calls them Ultra Black Baldies. I was down there this past week helping them work their horses on cattle, when the man who had purchased all of these fall heifers showed up to get them. He just went ahead and paid Clark for all the little 2 mos old spring heifers as well while he was there. $1500 each. They had also bred about 2 dozen cows to some registered Chi-Angus bulls.. High percentage Chianina.. 60% or better, and homozygous black. He is calling these Maga Ultra Blacks. I was there a couple of months ago when they were calving, to help them learn to work the calves on horse back. These calves were anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks old... both the Ultra Black Baldies and the Maga Ultra Blacks. There wasn't much difference in size between the two then, nut now?!!! The Maga Ultra Blacks easily had 75 lbs or more over the Ultra Black Baldy calves. Those heifers should make excellent cows for a terminal cross with Braford or Hereford. @Ky hills , I finally kept it on my mind long enough to carry a camera with me. There is a reason I never carry one or a phone when I am horse back working cows. We found enough of my camera in the arena, that my grandson says I might can buy another camera like it, and put that card or chip or whatever it is, from the busted one in the new one, and recover those pics.I am about to purchase a set of brangus cows, and wonder what bull would work best on them Angus or hereford bull.
