Lesson learned, we recently had hay delivered on monday evening and i was not home. My wife who is not that familiar with hay unloaded the tractor trailer. when i got home on wednesday evening this stuff was stinking to high heavens over here in north texas with all this dry heat. I stuck my hand in a bale and it was a cooking and starting to mold really bad. Now of course the hay dealer has not returned our phone calls. P.S. we are a Small Texas ranch owner buying from a Texas hay dealer, gonna give him till monday evening and if no response then i will be posting on many web sights. they have been advertising on The Hay Barn and The Hay Exchange. $ 3,200 gone as of now be very careful who you wire money to these days. what i am getting at is i would like any suggestions on what or how to handle buying hay in the future with out insulting farmers on making sure i get what i am paying for. Thanks for any comments

That is the worst thing I've heard all day.

I'm sorry to hear got taken like this. I hope they make it right but something tells me you'll be posting the dealers info all over by Monday night.

I got taken by hay deal also. Bought load of hay, told Alfalfa with Orchardgrass, supposed to be 18% CP, 3x3x8 bales, supposed to weigh 900 pounds. Well, bales only weighed 700 and CP was 9.5%. When I got the weight I called and they adjusted price down(had not paid them yet) but took a week to get analysis back. Not as bad as what happened to you. My best recommendation is to only buy from a farmer directly (still can find a bad apple but not as likely in my opinion) or a hay broker that is reputable (you or someone you know has a long term relationship). I am not buying anything else off Craigs list or Hay Exchange. On a situation as bad as yours I wonder if you could take legal action or get help from a government agency? May not be worth it but you may be mad enough to do it just to make a point.

Things like this is what makes it tough on honest guys like Jed and I to sell hay to people from Texas because they here the horror stories and think evryone is going to rip them off

I have also been on the other end of the situation where everything thing I said about the hay was true and then the cuustomer writes a bad check
That is why we request all HAY be paid for before we load it on the trucks to ship it
Then the customer pays the freight when the hay arrives
I am in the Hay business not the FREIGHT business and I would rather someone else haul the hay and I will leave my truck sit at the house
