Weaning

I convinced myself I should wean and precondition my calves this year. I brought the first group of 14 back to the home place yesterday on a field that I thought had good fence. So far in 24 hours they have found all the places I must have overlooked. I've gotten my fair share of exercise rounding them back up. Now I remember why I weened on the trailer to the sale the last couple of years. :lol2:

We weaned 28 calves yesterday. Naturally the weather is finally cool enough to keep the windows open. Yeah, bad call. So far so good, all calves accounted for, eating cubes & come running to me when I go out to check. I just feel so bad for the 1st calf heifers - nobody told them we were going to gank their calves & they're already hoarse from bawling =(

I wean with planks and steel. They're already worked up enough, I don't wanna be chasing them too.

I have 26 weaned and think its gonna pay off big time compared to selling them last week. Markets were higher this week. Some as much as 20 cents.
