How old should show calves be when weaned.
And how soon should i put a halter on.

I weaned of a 5mth old just two weeks ago and put a Halter on her she is doin good

I would say the 5 month age is as soon as i would wean one. However, I start them on halter as soon as possible. usually at weaning, but if mom is a show cow then the calf sees the halter at a younger age.

Our show calves get weaned around 6 - 8 months, when the rest of the calves get weaned. But if it is a particularly good calf, especially a bull, or a calf at foot on a show cow, we will leave them on longer, till they are 10 - 11 months or however long the cow can handle them. The longer they stay on milk the better.

Usually ours aren't broken in till a good time after weaning, 10 - 12 months, but many people like to get a halter on them as early as possible.

we have dairy cows, I show one calf each year for 4-H... I like to get the halter on all the possible ones ASAP. usually before they are a week old.

I like to get the Show Prospects started on feed as quickly as possible, so I put the dam on our show ration a fe days before calving. As soon as the calves are really diving into the feed with Mama, I pull them and start pouring the feed. This is usually at about three to four months of age. I have found that this really promotes growth. At seven to eight months, they are usually 200 pounds ahead of a milk and creep calf.
