Hi, just curious what percentage of body weight you think I should feed of corn to some heifers I'm keeping as replacements. I just weaned them, they are about 7 months. Also, at what point/age can you stop supplementing grain?

Our young heifers are grained only through the winter their first winter. From weaning to, say, May. After that, no grain. Hope you're staying warm tonight!

When first weaned for about 6-8 weeks our heifers get roughly 1 to 1 1/2 percent of their body weight in a mixed grain ration. The last couple of weeks we cut them back to around 1/2 percent then turn them back out with the cow herd for the winter. No supplement from then on unless the weather turns severe.
With decent quality hay they shouldn;t require any grain particularly straight corn.
