When weaning calves do you go by age or do you want your calves to be at a certain weight?

There are a lot of variables.
Condition of the cow- if the cow was getting drug down by a big calf, might wean as early as 5 months. (I don't have that problem with my big cows though.)
Other calves to wean with- Might wait on some younger calves, to wean all together.
If a 5 month old calf is almost as big as mother, I will wean them. For the most part, I wean by age. Usually 6-7 months. But size of the calf plays a huge roll too. I won't leave a great big calf on my cows. I don't see any point in it. (Maybe that helps with the longevity of my cows, I don't know. :D )

We wean by convnience. Late september is always a handy time for us. Doesn;t matter if they are feb or may calves.
