It has been a very dry latter part of summer here and the heat has been pretty devastating to the pasture. The cows have been hanging on but the smart thing to do is to wean the calves. I usually wean early March so I am 5-6 weeks early, I weaned last Wednesday. I have some friends who have been buying my surplus heifers the last few years and it just took a phone call to Andres and Tracy and they came down on Saturday and took 11 heifers. They are great to deal with, no mucking you around and it is great to see some cattle leaving the place. My steers I'll shoot to put them in a weaner sale on the 23rd March so it gives me time to get them gaining weight again after the weaning. They will stay out on pasture and i'll supplement them with a grain mix.

Amongst the heifers I have two nice Spickler Right Time 7681, W6 and W15, I kept a nice Hoffman Bar None, W11 and would have liked to have kept another but I had to let her go to make room for another. There are two SS Brickyard's W9 and W20.
The two bulls I kept are W14 (44 Brigade) and W12 (KCF Bennett Exponential). Some of the steers are by my bull, a SAV Rainmaster son who did a pretty good job.
I went with Right Time and Bar None as the two main sires I used again last year and have just ordered some more for this year. If I am happy with a sire I like to use them for 3 years.

Thanks I’m gonna get some Right time here as well. Good proven bull by now haven’t heard any bad on him.

Thank you for guys for all the kind comments about Right Time 7861. And especially Katpau who originally recommended the bull on here. At just a mere month shy of his 9th birthday he seems to have aged out on semen freezing ability. He is still standing on perfect feet. This is a current picture of him at World West in Billings Mt.

How many straws are in inventory? I plan to use him again this year. I probably better keep the best son of his in the next year or two and keep the progress going.

There is enough inventory for the upcoming breeding season I think. He was always easy to collect and always froze well. I really feel like his place in Angus history will be the legacy of his daughters. Just really sound cows that do their job well.

The 7861 daughters currently make up 16% of my total females and 15% of my calving age females. If they all stick around until next year they will make up around 20% of the calving age females. Really makes for some great flexibility on breeding decisions. I bred the 3-year olds to Sitz Logo 8148. Will find out who stuck to him in a week to 10 days. The first calf heifers are usually my lowest percentage that catch in the A.I. program.

Yes I think you will be able to go most any direction with his daughters. 7861 has always nicked well when mated back to Right Time pedigreed cows as you have already done. His daughters have aged well here and fertility seems to be above herd avg of both of the owner herds. We nearly lost him before we ever turned him with cows as he over centered in some frozen ruts. I found him in the morning unable to get up. I rolled him over with the loader bucket. He wasn’t airing up but he couldn’t get up either.
